Imagine That Chocolate Is Illegal In Your Country (Come on, This is Fun)

In this thought experiment, you will imagine that chocolate is illegal in the country that you are now living in. Please respond to the following prompts:

  1. Think of 20 possible reasons why chocolate is made illegal. Try to come up with rational and plausible arguments.
  2. Write a story on how and why chocolate has been declared illegal. Write about the crazy reasons that led to this unlikely outcome.
  3. Let’s say you are crazy about chocolate and you cannot live without it (I believe this is true for most of us). Write a thriller story on how you break the law. Perhaps you are making and selling chocolate illegally - you are a chocolate lord! What happens next?
  4. As chocolate is now on the black market, it is extremely expensive. Each chocolate bar is sold for 50 dollars or more (depending on the level of cocoa). Write a story where you meet chocolate dealers in an underground space. You suddenly hear police sirens and there seems to be no way out. What happens next?
  5. Imagine that you are an activist who is working towards the decriminalization and legalization of chocolate. This turns to be a very divisive topic and you receive death threats. Why do you think that is? Write a story on what happens next.
  6. Imagine that you are living in a dictatorship, a regime like the novel 1984. Big brother is watching you. All addictive materials such as cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, porn sites, and sugar are illegal — for your own good and health (i.e. benevolent dictatorship). How do you cope and survive in this world? Write down a story.
  7. Imagine that you are living in the Gilead regime (Handmaid’s Tale). Chocolate is considered sinful, lustful, and dangerous. Write a thriller story about a secret underground society that makes, sells, and consumes chocolate.
  8. Create your own movie scenario and plot that involves chocolate. See the movie trailer “Chocolat” below.
