Size matters contrary to popular belief introduction.

Perhaps the title “came out slightly wrong” with size matters contrary to popular belief. Maybe we should have been a bit more specific because size matters with image design contrary to popular belief. There is quite a bit you should know about image size and formats for different purposes.

With this article, you will learn precisely why image file size matters contrary to popular belief. But you will also be instructed on how to remedy that and not suffer any setback because you didn’t know. You will learn about image file size, but also a few Canva “tricks”. All because you now know that image file size matters contrary to popular belief, it is of paramount importance actually.

The most crucial part of image size and why it matters contrary to popular belief. Is knowing the allowed file sizes over different platforms. This also means that you might end up editing and uploading your Canva designs a few times. We found a similarity in image file size over several major social networks.

That is why image file size matters, contrary to popular belief. On the 22nd of October 2023, we wrote an article about “how to use GIF images to attract attention to Medium profiles”. We will include that article at the end of this subheading. Below are the required image file sizes especially with uploading GIF images.

Medium (25 Megs).

Most Social Networks (15 Megs).

You may have noticed a few Medium stories we wrote recently, for the purpose of demonstrating our GIF image strategy. We have found that the strategy, although sound, did pose a few challenges. When your GIF image size on Medium allows for a maximum of 25 megs. Most major social networks only allow for a maximum image file size of 15-meg.

Therefore you might want to keep your Medium image designs under 15 megs, then your featured image thumbnail will show when sharing it. With attracting attention, the design also matters contrary to popular belief. You will often exceed the 15-meg mark with Medium for more attention-grabbing images. There are 3 major elements of image size and design.

Capability To Create Curiosity (With Your H1 Header Or Title).

Ability To Attract Attention.

Correct Image File Size Allowed (Depending On The Platform).

When your GIF image size exceeds 15 megs (With Medium Stories), then you will simply have to resize your design in Canva. Just use the “Magic Switch” tool in Canva. Resize the image to fit the particular platform, and then upload it (As A GIF Image File). Write your post text, upload the GIF image and include the link to your Medium story.

Illustrated below, is an example of how we did that on Facebook because the Medium story featured image exceeded 15 megs. Size matters contrary to popular belief, and we just showed you why. But in design and creativity “size also matters”, your level of knowledge and experience that is. Contrary to popular belief, that matters.

When your Medium image does not show as a thumbnail or presentation image on major social networks. As mentioned before, you will have to edit and reduce image file size in Canva because it matters. As demonstrated, Facebook allows you the option to add your own image, and then upload your GIF file.

Then simply include the relevant hashtags, text and link to your Medium story. Image file size and design matter more than you know, contrary to popular belief, not to mention the balance between clarity and load speed. Which is one of 2 major SEO ranking factors. We promised the article guide on how to use GIF images with Medium, you might want to read the one below.

Suggested image sizing and file formats with Canva.

These are all tools you can use with image design and editing file size because they matter so much. You have so many different image file sizes and options with Canva, way too many to mention. But you will find them by clicking on the “Share” button, on the top right-hand side. Click on that for a new drop-down menu to open.

Next, you simply click on “Download” and another window will appear suggesting a particular format. You then click on that and choose from the drop-down menu. In the event you choose to create and download a GIF image file, we have illustrated that as can be seen below. You can choose any option from this menu.

With normal images, you might want to choose the PNG format. Because it creates a balance between image clarity and quality, but also image load speed. Because image file size matters, contrary to popular belief. You want to ensure you use the right image file size and format depending on the purpose of your image.

Because things like image file size and format matter, we also strongly suggest you choose Canva as your image design tool. Why? Well, we were recently informed of possible “Unauthorized image use legal action” and were able to prove our case. Because Canva provides you with the required licenses to use their designs. We received an apology from the New York legal representatives and the case was closed!

In light of that recent rather shocking experience, personally, we use nothing but Canva for designs. We do, however, strongly doubt that most “Royalty Free” image sites will be able to do the same. We might be wrong but we’re not taking any chances. Should we have “lost this case” we would have been liable to pay damages of €350!

Image design tips because image size matters.

With Canva you have the option to use a recently added tool called the “Magic Switch”. With this, you can resize any image in any format because Canva also knows that image size matters contrary to popular belief. As mentioned in this Medium story introduction, the basic accepted file size over multiple platforms is as follows.

Medium (25 Megs).

Most Social Networks (15 Megs).

But we have explained the “sharing snag” when using GIF images for Medium story featured images already. We have also provided the solution to that problem. With the Canva “Magic Switch” option, you can resize to more options than we could possibly mention here. Below is an illustration of where to find the “Magic Switch”.

The conclusion of size matters contrary to popular belief.

This brings us to the conclusion of why image file size and format matters contrary to popular belief. The ability of your design to create curiosity and attract attention is also equally important alongside image size and format.
