That’s a mouthful, isn’t it? Back when I hit the queer activist scene in 1990, LGBT was just taking over from LGB or GLB. For a while, LGBT vied with GLBT for popularity. Q soon started making the occasional appearance on the end, though nobody seemed sure if it stood for questioning or queer.
Today, both LGBTQ and queer are generally received as umbrella terms for all members of gender and sexual minorities. Except when they aren’t.
Sometimes, people who experience marginalization because of their gender or sexual identity feel unwelcome in “mainstream” queer culture. Asexual and intersex people, for example, say they often don’t feel included. Sometimes, queer people who are members of other marginalized groups (i.e. Black, indigenous, Asian, disabled, etc.) say they feel excluded. Can we talk about that?

That’s our Prism & Pen prompt for the coming two weeks. It’s a special call for stories from people who feel especially marginalized. It’s an invitation to talk to fellow queer people about what your issues are and what you wish people knew about you and your challenges.
As always, our prompts are meant to spark ideas and conversation, not to restrict. So “mainstream” queer folx, family members, and allies are welcome to submit too, so long as points of view are respectful/supportive.
