Summary

The undefined website is calling for submissions from LGBTQ+ individuals who feel marginalized within the community, encouraging them to share their experiences and perspectives through creative essays, poems, short fiction, memoirs, art reviews, and history.

Abstract

The undefined website features a writing prompt from Prism & Pen, inviting LGBTQ+ individuals who feel excluded or marginalized to share their stories. This initiative aims to give voice to those who may not feel fully included in mainstream queer culture, such as asexual and intersex people, as well as queer individuals from other marginalized groups like racial minorities and people with disabilities. The prompt is open to various forms of expression, including creative essays, poems, and short fiction, and welcomes submissions from allies and family members, provided their contributions are respectful and supportive. The website also provides submission guidelines and showcases previous related stories, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and representation within the LGBTQ+ community.

Opinions

  • The LGBTQ+ acronym is recognized as an umbrella term for gender and sexual minorities, but its inclusivity is sometimes questioned by those who feel marginalized within the community.
  • There is a need for dialogue about the exclusion felt by certain LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those who are asexual, intersex, or members of other marginalized groups.
  • The Prism & Pen prompt is designed to be inclusive, allowing for a broad range of creative expression while maintaining a respectful and supportive environment for sharing personal narratives.
  • The website acknowledges the evolution of LGBTQ+ terminology and the ongoing discussion about who feels represented by these terms.
  • By highlighting stories from excluded LGBTQ+ persons, the website aims to foster understanding and shed light on the diverse challenges faced by different members of the community.

I’m The Excluded LGBTQ Person, THIS is What I Want You to Know

A Prism & Pen writing prompt

L G B T Q I A +

That’s a mouthful, isn’t it? Back when I hit the queer activist scene in 1990, LGBT was just taking over from LGB or GLB. For a while, LGBT vied with GLBT for popularity. Q soon started making the occasional appearance on the end, though nobody seemed sure if it stood for questioning or queer.

Today, both LGBTQ and queer are generally received as umbrella terms for all members of gender and sexual minorities. Except when they aren’t.

Sometimes, people who experience marginalization because of their gender or sexual identity feel unwelcome in “mainstream” queer culture. Asexual and intersex people, for example, say they often don’t feel included. Sometimes, queer people who are members of other marginalized groups (i.e. Black, indigenous, Asian, disabled, etc.) say they feel excluded. Can we talk about that?

I’m The Excluded LGBTQ Person and THIS is What I Want You to Know

That’s our Prism & Pen prompt for the coming two weeks. It’s a special call for stories from people who feel especially marginalized. It’s an invitation to talk to fellow queer people about what your issues are and what you wish people knew about you and your challenges.

As always, our prompts are meant to spark ideas and conversation, not to restrict. So “mainstream” queer folx, family members, and allies are welcome to submit too, so long as points of view are respectful/supportive.

Ready to tackle the subject?

Please send in your creative essays, poems, short fiction, memoir, art reviews, and history. If you’re already working on something else, no worries; we welcome submissions about anything within our guidelines at any time.

If you’ve not yet written for P&P, here are our submissions guidelines and procedures:
