Abstract

It’s okay to have a long-term goal in mind. Say, you want to make 1,000 or 10,000 dollars a month. That’s great! But have you even made your first dollar yet? Odds are, if you’re new, probably not. I’m Taking Medium One Step at a Time

Achieving short-term goals is so much better than long-term

We all have a grander plan in mind for life. Whatever it may be, we all have a pretty good idea about it. We know what we want to do, maybe a way or two to get there, and how it will impact our lives. But do you have a plan for Medium?

Whether you’re fairly new to the site like me or you’ve been here a while, do you have goals for yourself to achieve? Do you want to make money, gain followers, sharpen your writing skills?

These are great goals to have but don’t put all of your eggs in one basket at a time.

My Goals

While gaining followers and sharpening my writing skills are the main goals for me, my other one is to make money on Medium. I don’t want to make so much to quit my day job just yet, but maybe sometime down the road, that would be nice. That’s a long way off from now. Currently, I’m taking Medium one step at a time. And here’s how you can, too.

Set Realistic Goals.

It’s okay to have a long-term goal in mind. Say, you want to make $1,000 or $10,000 dollars a month. That’s great! But have you even made your first dollar yet? Odds are, if you’re new, probably not. Maybe you haven’t even hit $5 yet.

You need to set realistic goals for yourself in order to do well on Medium. In doing so, treat it like the mobile game Temple Run where you have to consistently achieve various objectives.

So if you want to make $1,000 a month, start by making $1, $10, 25, $50, and so on a month. If you’re still early in the month like we are now in March, set your goals higher. Make them $100, $125, $150, and so on. Achieve these amounts first before reaching your desired amount.

This is what billionaire Warren Buffett did, and he turned out alright. Just take one little step at a time. If you do this, then you’re on the path to success.

Achieve Said Goals

In order to achieve these small steps, figuring out how to do so is a must. For Medium, your best bet would be to write great content, consistently, every day. It’s as simple as that.

Since I’ve been on here for three weeks, I’ve been doing these things and more. I’ve also been following publication guidelines and reading great work by other writers. This helps me become an even better writer.

By achieving your small goals, you will see results quicker than you think. By starting small, you can achieve big in the long run.

Never Give Up

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” — Wayne Gretzky

The hockey star is right. You will never know what will happen if you don’t try. So all the articles you don’t write or you don’t publish will not give you any results. You won’t know what will become of them if you don’t pursue them. And who cares if they’re terrible?

Every writer starts out untalented. But how do they grow? They learn by practicing consistently every day. This is the key to doing well on Medium: staying consistent and never giving up. It’s worked for me and it will work for you too.

Final Thoughts

When first joining Medium, I jumped into an ocean of uncertainty and just kept swimming. I’m learning the ropes, writing every day, and growing as a writer one step at a time. It’s been great for me so far. There’s no doubt you’ll have the same success as me, if not more. I believe in you.

You should believe in yourself too.
