I’m Spilling the Tea on my Future as a Writer, Important Values, and More
August Q&A with The Brain is a Noodle

These questions were created by Lucy Dan 蛋小姐 (she/her/她) for the writers of the Medium publication The Brain is a Noodle.
[1] What’s a new technique or topic you’d like to try writing about?
I would love to do more interviews. I’ve been interviewing people since I was 15, back when I used to work for my high school’s radio station. I try to spend each year doing my fair share of interviews to keep my skill sharp, but this year I haven’t done many.
I want to think of an interesting way to do it that’s a bit against the grain. I get bored easily watching typical interviews.
I’ve been watching some great talk shows/interview shows lately (i.e. Desus and Mero, The Choe Show, Nardwuar, Let’s Go, Atsuko!) that have opened my eyes to the dope possibilities of a talk show/interview show.
I’d love to create an interview segment that’s a little weird and super fun. Maybe something centering around pop culture? Got to go to the drawing board and think about it more.
[2] What are your top three values in life? Why are they your main values?
Balance: I’ve learned that the key to life is learning how to balance everything, from relationships to hobbies, while centering your contentment. It’s hard not to go overboard on one specific thing; I do it often. I’ve got a great example for you that literally happened today.
So I’m traveling right now and I wanted to spend some time exploring the city. I put too many things on my itinerary and ended up pushing myself too far, past my breaking point. I ended up getting like 20,000 steps, which I never do.
Now, I’m sitting in my hotel room with sore, painful legs and can barely get out of bed. It’s a daily practice, this balance thing.
Grace: I’m hard on myself; I always have been. But, I’m trying more and more each day to give myself grace. I’m also learning to give other people grace as well and not harbor negative feelings in my soul long-term.
Diversity: As I grow older, I’m learning that I thrive in a diverse, inclusive community. The white perspective has always been put on a pedestal throughout my life, even when I didn’t know how to describe it. I’ve just felt like I didn’t belong.
Diversity makes me feel like I have a place within a community and not just hating from outside of the club even though I know I will never get in.
[3] If you only had 5-minutes to squeeze in some mental health / self-care time, what would you do?
Walking outside always cleanses my mind and body. If I can’t walk I’d probably meditate or listen to a song that makes me want to dance.
[4] What is one story, tradition, or myth about death that has been passed down your family?
We don’t talk about death much. And — it’s been years since someone close to me passed away. So, honestly, I don’t know.
[5] If you could have a magic wand to zap away one food in life and never have it exist again, what would it be?
I don’t hate any food enough to want it to disappear. I’m literally thinking so hard — but my brain is empty. But, if I think back to when I was a kid, I’d probably say tomatoes. I used to have bad dreams about tomatoes.
It was so bad at one point. I’d look at a tomato and dry heave. But, then, I ate a super delicious tomato on a sandwich and nothing was the same.
Faves?
- Favourite podcast app? There is a correct answer to this question: Spotify.
- Favourite app on your phone? TikTok — SO MUCH FUN. I don’t understand TikTok haters because the overwhelming vibes on TikTok are positivity and silliness. Like, do you hate smiling?
- Favourite piece of technology? My computer.
- Favourite person? My mom :)
- Favourite kitchen item? My automatic French fry cutter. I just got one this year and I’ll probably use it for the rest of my life.
