I’m Rootin… Inspired by Sue Me by Wale’ Film by Kirby Jean Raymond
Seen and heard something that stirred my soul
I saw Black Jesus And an advertisement to get kinkier hair… The juxtaposition of sublime subliminals sit in contrast to the reality of Black lives and bodies being disrespected, neglected, and disregarded in the States and abroad In China, African men are being falsely accused, evicted, beaten in the streets for being the cause of a disease their continent did not have until foreigners brought it….
Old head with young ears
Old school values — join in the eternal struggle amplified by the bold and prolific youth
As a matriarch and mother of a Black son
Beautiful, talented, intelligent, innocent and a bit naive
Love and yearning for full life without strife — praying for peace and protection
Fear and pride
What if the world loved, liked, respected, and supported Black men, women and children?
What would it feel, experience or look like — would it taste sweet yet unfamiliar
I’m rootin’
Lover of Black men — advocate for Black people
Seeking unity
But I’m rootin’ for equality, justice and dignity in my community with Brown and white
I’m rootin’ scared to say for who because our lives are disposable, dispensable
I like my tattered peace and comfort
But I’m still rootin’
Thank you young visionaries and of hip hop lyricists speaking truth to power over soulful, anointed voices
I’m rootin’ for consciousness and courage
I’m rootin’ for faith and a future where Black life has value — filled with less hurt and pain
I’m rootin’
A special thank you to: Wale’ The incomparable Kelly Price Kirby Jean Raymond
