I’m Rich!

At least that’s how it feels…

Yes, the $1.04 in the picture is not unlike the dollars you see framed on the wall behind many small storefront business counters. To that business owner, it more than likely represents a “first sale.”

This is my first dollar earned for writing on Medium. I am no less proud of it than that business owner with their first sale.

That said, if you are a new writer on Medium and struggling with how to get to the “first dollar”, I am hopeful this article can provide some encouragement.

August 15, 2022, was the date my first article was published. Today is November 30, 2022. That’s about 15 weeks to get from zero to my first dollar. And I mean zero. Zero followers, zero reads, zero claps. All zeros across the board.

With dedication, discipline, and patience, your growth will happen.

Consider your passion for writing. Without passion for what you are writing, this will go nowhere.

We all have a passion for something in our lives. In some cases, there may be multiple instances. For example, the foundation for my creative passion is photography. Writing about those images has evolved as a parallel passion.

There is a LOT of advice on Medium about how to be successful with your writing endeavors. Some of it is quite good, and some…well, you’ll have to decide what your mission is and if that advice applies to you.

If your mission is to follow your passion for writing, then just write. You need to do nothing more than that. Your passion will be recognized through the gradual accumulation of followers who acknowledge you for what you are writing.

For some, the acknowledgment comes quicker than others.

So yes, I do feel rich. It’s only a dollar at this point, but more important is the incremental recognition of my passion for writing and photography.

Final words; understand the Medium platform for what it represents, experiment with publications that best match what you are writing about, and thoroughly understand the platform and publication rules.

Just write! A number of articles are written on Medium that say exactly that. So if you’re here to write, then write, and the rest will take care of itself.
