I’m Out Of The Office Today Because It’s My Birthday

When this article is published, I am either still on the ferry, or already on the German island Helgoland.

My American friends are celebrating Independence Day today. In Germany, the fourth of July is a day like any other. Only for me today is a special date because I was born on the fourth of July 1973.

On my birthday, I do not work on principle. Nevertheless, I wanted you to be able to read something of mine today, so I wrote this article on the twenty-ninth of June and put it together for automatic publication on the fourth of July.

My first trip after the lockdown

I have not made a trip since mid-March. I have neither been abroad, nor have I left my home town. I have not seen my family for weeks, and there were no parties. My wife and I were alone almost the whole time.

But today, with a few friends and relatives, we are going to Helgoland by ship together.

In case you do not know this island, you can read the Wikipedia article about it here:

We will leave in the morning by boat in a small village called Büsum on the north German coast and go out to sea by ferry for about two and a half hours.

On the ferry, we have to wear our face masks. The ship only runs with half of the passengers who would typically be on board. We must declare in writing that we have no symptoms of illness and that we do not come from an area where there is currently a lockdown.

As soon as we reach Helgoland, we will have dinner in a restaurant where we already reserved two tables a few months ago.

Since our group consists of four households and only members of two households are allowed per table, we have reserved two tables. The tables in the restaurant must be at least two meters apart.

Afterward, we will take a short walk across the island and look at the steep cliffs. After that, we will do duty-free shopping.

On Helgoland, there are no customs duties or value-added tax on all kinds of goods. Every adult can buy a certain amount of alcohol, cigarettes, perfume, and other products.

The savings are quite impressive. Most tourists come to Helgoland only for this reason. For us, cheap shopping is only one of many reasons. The landscape there is breathtaking, and the journey is already a highlight.

Today we will finally be among friends again, eat, drink, laugh with them, and forget the last months’ worries.

I hope you will have as lovely a day as I have. To the Americans among my readers: Celebrate yourself and your country and be sure to get rid of that weird guy posing as your president in November.

I’ll be back here tomorrow. I hope you are too.
