I’m New To Medium But Not New To Blogging

I joined Medium for the first time ever on January 28, 2024. A series of events (Including job loss and a blog that wasn’t making any money) led me to finally explore Medium.
A few people on Wordpress have posted about writing on Medium. They all had great things to say about it and were making money. It was kind of them to share, because had they not I’m not sure if it would have been on my radar.
It’s bizarre thinking back how I took so long to sign up for Medium when I was writing regularly. Live and learn!
I thought you had to build a following from square one and you’d have to pay $50 or some other high number to join. Had I known it only cost $5 to be a member and that you can start making money right away, I would have signed up 3 years ago!
3 years ago I took my Wordpress blog to the next level. It was the aftermath of the pandemic that I worked from home in my own apartment. I was seeing so many people making money online to help pay for their bills and life.
A lot of people make it sound like blogging for money is easy, but after 3 years of blogging on Wordpress I have only made $20 (The threshhold is $100 so it’ll take me quite some time to get paid LOL).
Crazy, right? Especially when many people make $20 on Medium after one week.
Despite the fact that I wasn’t making any money blogging on Wordpress, I enjoyed content writing about lifestyle, self-publishing, and other random topics. It’s like I knew at the back of my mind a place like Medium was out there waiting for me to seize it and help my writing journey.
On Wordpress I have written everyday some months then other months I’ve posted 2–3 times per week. Due to having a regular content writing schedule, I found it easy to start writing regularly on Medium.
I’ve found Medium as a whole to be more user-friendly than Wordpress and the people here seem to match my “vibe” more as well. I feel like most of you are people I’d talk to on breaks if we worked together or if we met up at a networking event.
I’m grateful for the practice I’ve had on Wordpress to launch my solopreneur era on Medium. I realize it’s going to be a lot of work. The top 10% of earners here have been grinding away for years. I get that I won’t be an “overnight success” and don’t expect to be. There is money to be made here, but it’s not without effort and strategizing.
Writing for Medium is different from writing on Wordpress. There are far more business-minded and goal-oriented people on Medium. Wordpress tends to be better suited for personal bloggers though some are able to make it as professional bloggers once they build their audience.
I will learn as much as I can in this first year on Medium. Everyone I’ve read so far has taught me a lot. I’m not new to content writing, but I still have much to learn when it comes to writing good articles for Medium.
By the way, are you on Wordpress?
If so, feel free to follow me there! I’ll follow you back. I post mainly about self-publishing, but you may enjoy it if you’re a book author like me.
Thank you for stopping by today.
