I’m going to Start Learning Vietnamese!

Essential Vietnamese phrases for Backpackers

Christmas vacation is coming!

Yesterday, we booked our air tickets to Asia. My boyfriend and I spend a few weeks of our holiday in South-East Asia. After that, we go to Japan to be with my family, then come back to Canada.

Every winter, we go to different destinations, but we like to go somewhere warm because we can better enjoy the winter here in Quebec and it is long enough to appreciate the arrival of spring.

Our destination in winter 2019

We have tickets to go to Bangkok. We don’t know where to go from Bangkok yet, but we are probably going to Vietnam and to Cambodia too. Japanese passport holders can stay in Vietnam for only two weeks and so we will need exit after our two-week stay. We are likely to go to Cambodia after Vietnam, but we are not sure yet.

So I will start learning Vietnamese; essential and practical phrases for travelling around in Vietnam!

We have been to Vietnam a few times before, but I was always lazy learning Vietnamese. This time, I want to be more enthusiastic about their language.

Use Twitter as a reminder

Before we went to Belarus in May, I learnt very basic Russian. It worked well for me; at least it was better than nothing. I will try the same thing this time too.

First, I changed my title of the Twitter account which I check every day. I added the words which mean “be learning Vietnamese” so that I can tell myself that I need to learn a Vietnamese word every morning when I see my Twitter account.

Then, I tweet one phrase or one word in Vietnamese on my Twitter every day. They should be some critical phrases and useful for travelling.

Recently I learnt how to use SoundCloud, which makes it easy to share the sound of phrases which I learn on social media.

Make content by collecting things I learnt

If I learn one phrase or one word every day, it will be 30 phrases in a month. I will collect those things I have learnt and will make content online. I am aiming to publish each content every seven days or so.

I have been travelling with my backpack since I was eighteen years old. I know which phrases are useful and which are not when you travel in non-touristic places. I know the priority of learning travel languages. I think that my minimum of 30 phrases in Vietnamese will be helpful for other travellers.

If you also plan to go to Vietnam in the future, do not miss my posts, please. If you are a Vietnamese speaker, feel free to comment or leave a note to correct my Vietnamese! Cam on! (Thank you!)
