Summary

In 2022, Nia Simone McLeod set a personal goal to explore new music by listening to 100 new albums, with the aim of expanding her musical preferences beyond familiar genres and artists.

Abstract

Nia Simone McLeod embarks on a music discovery journey in 2022 by committing to listen to 100 new albums throughout the year. This challenge is a departure from her music habits in 2021, which were dominated by nostalgia and relistening to old favorites during a tough year. She defines "new" as music that is unfamiliar to her, regardless of its release date, and sets guidelines to ensure she actively seeks out new music rather than passively listening. She plans to write about her experiences and findings on Medium, detailing each album and sharing her impressions in short-form posts. Her goal includes diversifying her music consumption, aiming for 20% hip-hop/rap and 80% other genres. This challenge is not only about personal growth but also about engaging with a community of music enthusiasts and inviting others to join in and share their discoveries.

Opinions

  • Nia views her resolution to listen to 100 new albums as aspirational and slightly unrealistic, but attainable and motivating due to her competitive spirit.
  • She acknowledges that the challenge may seem easy for some but daunting for others, playfully referring to those who might find the task mundane as "Weenie Hut Jr's" shoppers.
  • Nia is not strictly limiting herself to full-length albums; she is open to various types of musical projects, including EPs, mixtapes, and compilation albums.
  • She expresses a strong desire to broaden her musical horizons and is particularly enthusiastic about discovering non-mainstream music that she genuinely enjoys.
  • Nia values accountability and intends to document her challenge publicly on Medium, hinting at a passion for oversharing and community engagement.
  • Her approach to the challenge is pragmatic, with a rule allowing her to skip songs that do not appeal to her within the first minute, ensuring the experience remains enjoyable rather than a chore.

I’m Going to Listen to 100 New Albums in 2022

It’s the beginning of a new year babes: 2022! That means it’s time to make aspirational, slightly unrealistic resolutions like listening to 100 new albums in a year.

In 2021, I was in a deep music rut. I spent a ton of time relistening to old music, intoxicated by the nostalgia of it all during a rough year. This year I wanted to shake it up — no Zendaya.

That’s why I decided to take on a challenge that literally no one asked for: listening to 100 new albums in 2022.

Now, depending on your own music listening habits, listening to 100 new albums in a year may sound wild or it may sound like a challenge made for those who shop at Weenie Hut Jr’s.

For me, 100 albums is a number attainable enough to not be intimidating, but challenging enough to invoke my competitive spirit.

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty details!

The details of Nia’s 100 New Albums in 2022 challenge

  1. “New” music just means that the music is new to me. It can come out at any time in history.
  2. If I don’t like a song within one minute, I’m skipping to the next one. The grand point of this challenge is to find new songs, in places that I would have never thought to look, that I actually like. You’re not going to catch me suffering out here.
  3. I’m not going to listen to only full-length albums. I’m open to all musical projects: EPs, mixtapes, compilation albums, etc.
  4. Genre-wise, I’m shooting for 20% hip-hop/rap and 80% other genres. I’m so ready to broaden my musical horizons.

For accountability, and because I love to overshare, I’ll be documenting my experiences on Medium. For each album I listen to, I’ll write a short form post about it.

I’ll give you a little hint for the first album I listened to in 2022, I think it’ll be good 4 u.
