I’m Going Back to the 9–5 World
For a while anyway
Many of us, as writers, hope to escape from the world of the 9–5 jobs that seem to be so constricting on life in some ways. That being said, we all need a steady paycheck. Especially with kids.
I am still going to be writing here though, have no fear!
The first year I had my blog, I also had a 9–5 job. I did my writing in the mornings before work and then went into my home office.
I am going to be working from home again, so at least there is no commute. I am grateful to find an English-speaking job here in Germany, which is a big plus!
In some ways, going back to a 9–5 for the next year seems daunting after being able to write full-time for the last 6 months. I will be on the clock again and on someone else’s schedule.
That being said, going back to a 9–5 isn’t a sign of failure. It is just a sign that the time isn’t right yet for me to write full-time.
They say it takes 5 years to be successful in a new business venture. I knew that going into this from when I used to own a bar back in 2008.
Since I am only 1.5 years into being a published writer, I shouldn’t expect to be able to make a full-time thing out of this. I just got an early taste of what my life could be like. What my life will be like someday.
Just not yet. It isn’t my time to make a living off of writing yet.
But, as I read in a recent article from Tim Denning, you need to have a 5-year plan. You need to be driven. You need to have an obsession with your goals.
I have all those things.
So that means, according to Medium’s favorite writer, I have the secret sauce to be successful. Do you have it too?
Do you have the drive and obsession to stick with something for 5 years without seeing an instant pay-off?
If you do, then you have the secret sauce too. It’s called persistence.
Most bloggers fail before they hit the 6-month mark. Why? Because they give up and stop writing.
The surest way to fail is to give up. If you stop before you reach the finish line, you will never win the race. You will be nowhere close.
Are you willing to put in 5 years of work to make your writing a success? I am. I hope I see you there at the finish line with me!
