I’m Building A Resource To Make Sustainable Choices Easier
It’s called Choosing Eco. Help us make the sustainable choice in your life. It’s not for you and me. It’s for all of us.
In late 2019, I was inspired by a friend who was starting a company and an app called Remark (it has since launched on the App Store and Google Store). For a long time, my wife and I had been passionate about wanting to make better eco-friendly and sustainable choices in our life.
We know and understand that it isn’t easy. I kept searching for ideas, for resources, and for help about where to start. What could I do locally? How could I make a difference? I got frustrated that there was so much out there, but it required insight, Google skills, and the effort to find answers. And I certainly couldn’t find all of them.
That’s when I was struck by my own inspiration. I’d create that all-inclusive resource by myself. And thus, Choosing Eco was born. It went live on March 5, 2020.
The Pandemic Arrived
Nine days later, both my kids were suddenly home from school. My son, who was in kindergarten was now shifted to online learning, which is a bit of a challenge and you’re supposed to be learning how to learn in kindergarten! (My son went back to school in February 2021.)
My daughter’s preschool closed and she was home too, until mid-June 2020.
Needless to say, this completely changed our lives. Passion projects disappeared for a year. My work flexibility was dramatically altered. My wife, whose insurance we were on, was now the one whose schedule we ensured was consistent. I worked when I could.
All this meant that Choosing Eco sat dormant for the most part, for nearly a year.
Until just about a month ago, when time and flexibility returned as my kids went back to school.
The Next Steps
As I return to putting effort into fleshing out the content on Choosing Eco, I fill a Trello board with endless links, ideas, and resources that need to translate to the website in the near future.
Since late 2020, I’ve been writing weekly journal entries about a Zero Waste Challenge here on Medium as well as the website.
There are a million ideas to grow the website, to create a richer set of ideas to share with the world, and connect others who have worked in this space with other audiences too. There’s so much to do — and I can’t do it alone. (Well, I can, but it will take me infinitely longer, and I prefer to work with others who share a passion).
Share Your Sustainability Story
So, if you care about our Earth, about sustainability, climate change, recycling, zero waste — whatever it is, please consider writing for Choosing Eco. Whether you do it here on Medium, or on the website (or both). Help me on Trello by becoming a contributor and adding links, ideas, resources, etc. to the board. Or, if at the very least, you just want to stay informed. Follow Choosing Eco here.
Because at the end of the day, caring about our earth isn’t about you or me. It’s about all of us.
(Oh, and remember that Earth Day is on April 22nd, so get ready to hug your planet especially hard that day.)
