Lessons from the elderly

I love asking the elderly what they have learned in their lives. I have come to the conclusion that whatever the lesson is, it is suited to that person’s life.

There is not really a common thread.

The real beauty about getting these answers from their life experience is that it puts things quickly back in perspective for me.

What is really important in life?

When we are young we tend to focus on things that don’t really matter in the long run.

We take our health for granted. We take our vitality for granted.

Here are lessons from the elderly I treasure:

1 — Mr. Frank the yacht owner and millionaire

“Never listen to the good advice of others. Make your own way”

2 — Ouma Anna [my grandmother who passed away]

“Always look at the positive of everything in life”

3 — Ms. Katherine who’s husband has dementia

“Remember there’s always someone worse off than you”

4 — Mr. Jim, an elderly with dementia

“Always be grateful for everyone”.

*I also asked him what regret he has and he said he wished he was richer, which was funny because he is quite well-off.

5 — Ms. Marie from France, living in Spain

“Have vices in moderation” [like chocolate, wine, etc] ”.

Life happens in the moments. May we be reminded to pay attention to our moments.
