Summary

"Illusionary Dreams" is a free verse poem by Lori Carlson that explores themes of dreams, longing, and love, juxtaposing the ethereal beauty of a dreamscape with the poignancy of unfulfilled yearning.

Abstract

The poem "Illusionary Dreams" by Lori Carlson delves into the enigmatic nature of dreams and the emotional landscape they invoke. Through vivid imagery of a dreamlike setting, the poem conveys a sense of serene longing and the bittersweet remembrance of a love that feels as elusive as the "calm black waters" and as transient as the "yellow-blue awakenings." The author paints a picture of a violet forest under starlight, where the narrator experiences a profound connection that is as fleeting as the dream itself, leaving them to mourn the distance from that idyllic moment. The poem concludes with an acknowledgment of the dream's illusory nature, yet it is this very illusion that fuels the narrator's desire to return to the dreamt realm.

Opinions

  • The poem suggests that dreams can evoke powerful emotions and a sense of connection that feels more real than waking life.
  • There is an underlying tone of melancholy for the transient nature of dreams and the inability to hold onto the feelings and experiences they provide.
  • The author seems to believe in the transformative power of love, even if it is experienced within the confines of a dream.
  • The use of color and natural elements in the poem serves to enhance the otherworldly quality of the dreamscape and the emotional journey of the narrator.
  • The poem implies that the memory of the dream, though painful in its intangibility, is a cherished illusion worth revisiting.

A Free Verse Poem on Dreams and Longing

By Arlo Magicman @ shutterstock.com

In a dream, I feel dark blue among the foliage the river murmurs, teeming like sands by starlight, the bark of the boughs darken

The evening shadows pull faces by the waves There’s a coolness upon my feet as I smile at the violet forest. I long for the time —

You melted to me, on the calm black waters under the light of the horizon rushes as an eternal voice whispered, love will —

I mourn to be there, but the distance from that time of yellow-blue awakenings and pearl skies are but sea-infused illusions
