Illumination Through Thought, Word, and Deed

As you think, so you are!

What is a thought? In general usage, it is the process of using your mind to consider something. It can also be the product of that process: an idea or just the thing passing through your mind. Thought can also refer to the organized beliefs of a period, individual, or group.

Thoughts are expressed through words and the words one uses and how one chooses to use them tells you much of what one means and who one is.

“When deeds and words are in accord, the whole world is transformed.”

Chuang Tzu

Every single thought has a physical response. It may be a minimal muscular, skeletal, chemical, or electrical response. How you think and use words influences how you act. This being the case, it is important for you, if you wish to be happy and free with a life filled with love and clarity of thought to consciously choose the words you use. This is especially so if you are seeking to avoid the use of words and phrases that will create unnecessary struggle and suffering. Words have meaning so subtle and profound that they can create a radical shift in your personal reality without your knowing that it is even happening.

What a radical concept — the idea that the words you choose to use may create the reality you experience. Understanding this is essential to living a spiritual life and creating powerful social relationships in the digital world. If you use social networking as a tool to create a Wisdom Community, you must understand that the language of a group is the key to defining its culture. Once you have an understanding, you can truly create unlimited possibilities and can bring your visions and dreams to fruition.

With this understanding, your next step is to make the decision to use or avoid certain words and phrases and do so with clarity and intention. This will become a powerful tool for personal healing and elevating the quality of your practice. This is very difficult to do if you are rigid and dogmatic in thought. It requires inquiry and exploration.

The Takeaway

In Transmodern Zen there is a term “Beginner’s Mind”. It refers to a way of thinking that is soft, open, objective, and clear. To enter into and remain in Beginner’s Mind you must avoid using specific words that pull you away from that state of consciousness. These words include “would, could, should, but, maybe, and try”. There are other words that fit in this category as well. However, these are the ones most commonly used unconsciously by people. These words help create and/or reinforce patterns of behavior that create unnecessary struggle.
