Miserable? It’s Probably Your Fault.

A common thing I’ve noticed in people that are unhappy with their life is an unwillingness to make real change at the cost of looking like a failure. No one is forcing you to stay in your current situation, and only you can make the decision to make the change and be the best and happiest version of yourself.

I feel like this should be one of the first things we learn when becoming an adult. Instead, we are taught to care too much about how we look, how much money we make, and what everyone else thinks about our life decisions.

Maybe you’re putting off, ending that toxic marriage because it would mean everyone would find out your life isn’t as sparkling as it seems? Or maybe you’re avoiding telling that negative friend you no longer want to see them because it would ruin the group dynamic? Is the short term negative backlash really worth giving up your long term happiness?

Everyone knows the type, people in their 20s and 30s who are posting on Instagram showing off their ‘perfect’ family life, their new BMW, and their angel-like children. When behind the scenes, hubby is emotionally abusive, the kids have zero discipline and they can’t afford their mortgage let alone a luxury car. So why do they focus on making themselves look successful instead of getting real and actually being successful?

If you ARE this person, it may be time for some deep reflection and a new perspective. You can’t take your followers and likes to the grave with you so it’s about time you redirected that time to creating a REAL fulfilling life.

When I was younger, I would never go to the gym to work out because I was scared people would judge me for not knowing what I was doing or for how I looked. Then in my late 20s, I had a thought — ‘When was the last time I looked at someone and judged them as harshly as I assumed others would judge me?’ NEVER! And if they did, that’s genuinely their own issue. I joined the gym that week.

Ask yourself some questions. How much do you care about Sally’s perfect looking eggs benedict? You don’t. So stop making your friends sit and wait while you take the perfect photo of your food! Just enjoy the moment for yourself.

The day I realized that I’m not so important, was the day I was set free. No one really cares if your life looks incredible, but you most definitely should care more about your true happiness. This ‘bury your head in the sand but make sure you get that boomerang cheersing mimosas’ thing has to stop or we may be looking at a generation of older people with a lot of regrets.

At the end of the day, you need to think deeply about what will make YOU happy. You only have one life so don’t waste it living for other people. It may take some hard work but ultimately, happiness is a choice. So choose it!
