If You Want to Be Successful as a Writer, You have to Come to Terms With This
Is the writing life worth it for you?
How would you feel if someone followed you around for a month, documented everything you said and thought that was wrong, and then decided to publish it for the entire world to see?
What if I sweetened the pot by telling you that the reality of you being able to turn your passion into a full-time income often feels out of reach?
That’s what writing can be like.
But there’s a way to confront that while having courage and not being a downer, and it’s summed up in a single word:
Passion.
If writing is your passion, you’ll do it no matter what. You’ll have to do it.
Even if financial success is delayed (or never arrives). Even if your innermost thoughts are met with criticism and disdain, you will find a way to write.
It’s part of the curse of creativity.
You have to come to terms with the fact that writing may not get you the accolades you want. If it does, there’s a good chance it won’t happen quickly.
Even authors who are well-known did writing after a 9–5 for years before they made a sustainable income from their craft.
If you don’t have the passion, you’ll be in it for the money.
If you’re in writing for the money, you won’t endure.
Now here comes the punch in the gut: if you don’t endure, you won’t succeed and get money.
The question you have to answer is, “Why do I write”?
