If You Want to be a Writer, Take the Craft of Writing Seriously
Take pride in your work

Writing for Illumination’s Integrated Publications is an awesome experience. I have learned so much about writing, I have grown as a writer since Illumination accepted me as a writer.
The other writers and Editors have mentored me and they are helping me achieve my goals. A few months ago, Dr. Yidliz invited me to join the editing team.
Being an editor has made me a better writer
It’s without question that editing submissions have made me a better writer, but there are recurring issues with submissions that I would like to address.
When I first started writing on Medium, my grammar and punctuation were not up to standard. The editors advised me to download the Grammarly App.
I use the Grammarly App, and the Hemingway Editor. Since I began using these two Apps, I have rarely been asked to correct something I submitted.
These applications are free and easy to use
It takes no time at all to use these Applications, but I spend hours correcting simple mistakes. I know waiting for your work to be published is a drag, so give the editors a break by proofreading your work.
Submitting a clean copy will go a long way in speeding up the publication process.
Save everyone time, attribute your photos
I don’t know how many times I leave notes asking writers to attribute the photos they use. Most of the time, it’s a matter of cutting and pasting, it takes no time at all.
If I send the article back to the writer for corrections. The article loses its place in the queue.
Be original, it’s not that hard to think of something different
There are too many writers saying the same thing. I get it, you think you’re God’s gift to content creation, But if I see one more Medium hack article, I’m going to lose my mind.
You know what I’m talking about, “Follow these steps as I do, and you too can make several thousand dollars a week,” or variations of that.
There’s nothing new in these articles. They all say pretty much the same thing. When I was homeless, I often heard this phrase, “ Don’t talk about it, be about it.”
There are no shortcuts
Stephen King
Write interesting articles, and at least try to be original. Stephen King said, “ Read a lot and write a lot. There are no shortcuts.”
My follower count is growing because I read a lot of articles, and I leave comments on those articles. That and writing quality work are the only three hacks worth a damn.
Take writing seriously, and submit something you can be proud about
If you’re on this platform to be a writer, take writing seriously. Proofread and format copy correctly. Listen to the editors. We’re volunteers partly because we enjoy helping people succeed, so help us help you.
Final thought:
Write when you have something to say, submit a clean copy, and listen to the editors. Doing these things will improve the Medium Experience for everyone.
