If You Could Ask For One Thing From God, What Would It Be?
I don’t have the luxury of much of a free time from taking care of a kid and a newborn. But whenever I do, I am, like most of us, on my phone. And thankfully I get drawn towards spiritual content rather than mindlessly scrolling the reels!
But on the spectrum of belief systems, from theist, atheist, and agnostic, I don’t know where I stand! Coz I neither firmly believe in anything nor do I dismiss it! I like to call myself a ‘seeker’! I want to know the truth by myself! You can name it God, superpower, consciousness, divinity, or universe! Luckily, I have found my path and taking baby steps toward it!
Now, a couple of days ago, I was listening to this lecture by Osho (Madly in love with Osho btw! Love love love him, and everything he has said) which left me stunned! And compelled me to reflect upon many aspects of my life! It’s been 2 days now but I can’t stop thinking about it! So thought of sharing it with you all. Here’s how it goes…
Osho asks that what if, one day God, pleased with your spiritual and/or religious practices, appears in front of you! And grants you anything that you ask for!
What is it that you would ask?
Now, Osho has a supremely distinguished and charismatic way of talking! He knows when to slow down and when to take effective pauses so that his listeners can actually absorb the wisdom! So in his long sweet pause…
I already had my answer! I would ask God to reveal the universal truth to me, I thought! The truth about how everything is working and what we are doing here!? That’s all I want to know. All these questions have bothered me my whole life! I think I have come to a little peace with it but the quest is still there. And I don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon. So that’s what I would love to know.
After this pause, he continued! He said, “You all must have your answers ready by now! Some will ask for wealth, some will ask for health. Kids, property, fame, peace, happiness, and whatnot! The list of our ambitions is never-ending.”
But the very fact that you have your answers ready, means that you were never interested in God in the first place.
You were doing all spiritual or religious practices so diligently not to get God! You did it to get those things!
You think you love him! But no, you don’t! You wanted to use God for all these trivial wishes!
Because if you were doing it to get God and to love him, you wouldn’t have anything to ask for in the first place!
You would be beaming with joy and ecstasy only by his presence. A true devotee doesn’t want anything but God!
And that ripped me apart! It was like a tight slap on my face! An eye-opener. I haven’t felt more ashamed in my whole life!!!
Time for you to ask yourself!
Would you ask for something?
Or God is enough for you?
Thanks for reading 🙏
