If Only I Were Mindful
A tribute to the late Thich Nhat Hanh

If only I could walk with Brother Thay, find happiness in the here and now, realize there's no beginning or end, that people are all the same and connected in many ways
If only I were compassionate, not condescending and full of pride, modulate my emotions, open up my heart chakra, and be balanced in the world
If only I were grateful for the food in my refrigerator, for my ancestors who made life easier, speak in ways that calm my restlessness, and notice each step of my journey
If only I could act more respectfully, appreciate the different cultures, understand the struggles of people — the idea of a united brotherhood, not just getting along with neighbors
If only I had been born in Plum Village, learned what activates my ego and decreases my Karmic debt I'd find wisdom in the stem of a flower and see the universe in one grain of sand.

In the 90s, I listened to one of Thich Nhat Hanh's recordings and was blown away by his interpretation of Buddhism. From that moment on, he has been one of my spirit guides. I still remember his anecdote about the meditation on "the cookie." He inspired me to write One Precious Cookie.
