If Life Isn’t About Money, What Is Life All About?

Okay, I get it; I’m an empty man; I only care about money and nothing else. I was hoping you could fill me up with your wisdom and teach me more about the philosophy of life.
Here is the situation; somehow, I can’t wrap my mind around the idea that in today’s society, money isn’t everything. I feel that everyone is trying to build a case against money and support their argument with fluffy concepts that have no practical effect on their daily struggles.
In your opinion, If life is not all about money, then what is it about? Is it watching Netflix and porn? Is it playing computer games and cursing strangers? Is it gossiping about friends online with people you never met? Is it about pretending to connect with people you don’t care about on social media? Is it writing daily on Medium? Is it about traveling around the world on a budget? Or what? Could anyone explain?
I beg you to help me understand contemporary life better. How money isn’t everything if your hands can’t reach any of that stuff without cash, even love and friendships cost a lot of money these days, no?
Maybe I’m just an empty man, but I hope I’m not blind or stupid. Logically, life isn’t about money. Life is about living, but my struggle is how someone can afford to live without money.
A friend of my father used to be a rich, wise man; they called him the wisest trader of the market. I’m not sure about that! Once, he asked me a wise question when I was 16: Nour, what is your most prominent dream?
I wanted to show my passion for business and that I understand money, so my answer was I wanted to be the wealthiest man on this planet; he said, my son, you are an idiot. Life is not only about money; life is about love and caring.
Twelve years later, he lost 90% of his assets during the Syrian civil war, and his standard of living went down by a lot; the people he loved and cared about, none of them turned their back and returned the favor. He struggles to make big deals and get back into the business game.
Two months ago, I invited him and his son for a drink at an excellent coffee and asked him what is your biggest hopes now. He says to have more cash and return to his previous lifestyle. I said you are being foolish; life is not only about money; it’s about caring. By the way, how is love working for you now? He looked me in the eyes and said, thanks for the drink! I’m sorry; sometimes, I can be a bitch and a pain in the ass.
Every day in front of my eyes, I see and hear how people degrade the value and importance of money and think of it as garbage while they struggle to feed their hunger with little food.
Honestly, I have learned my lesson the hard way and reached the bottom line of my life. If I don’t have a lot of money to achieve what I need and make the surrounding people happy, safe, and satisfied, then there is no point in living and becoming a member of this modern society. I can head to the mountains, live naked, die naked and let the eagles of the mountains feed on my simple body and innocent soul.
Ladies and gentlemen, money is becoming everything; procrastinating on making a lot of it will leave you no choice but to end up at the bottom of society. Money has the power to send nations to extreme poverty and erase them from the map of the world and history books.
I’m not asking you to treat money as your life’s purpose, as a god, lover, or even mistress. All that I’m asking you is to admit that running away from making money will hunt you back in the ass one day or the other, and you shouldn’t take making cash quickly or easily for granted anymore.
Two years ago, my friend’s father got into hospital urgently for some deadly disease; they had to treat him over an extended period with a high bill. The man sadly doesn’t have insurance, and the family can no longer afford the bill.
I tried to help a little as some other friends tried to help, but the bill was so big that they had to sell the house and almost end on the street. The man needed a more extended treatment, but the family couldn’t afford to keep moving forward with the treatment.
The mother decided it was enough, and the man sadly passed away last year. He was a wise and honest gentleman; my friend was devastated. When I was at the funeral, my friend cried so hard on my shoulders while saying repeatedly: fuck money, fuck money, fuck money. That deep tone of his angry voice has always been echoing in my ears and brought to my eyes a few tears as I write this article for you. That situation could happen to any person, including you and me.
If you think life is about enjoying, living, loving, mating, exploring, sharing, or innovating, you are right, and I have no right to argue with you. But if you think you can achieve these things in contemporary life without decent money, then it’s time for me to interfere with your thoughts and kick you in the butt in the right direction.
With today’s inflation, the purchasing power of $2000 is worth $500 three years ago or maybe less. It can barely push you through the month in an emerging economy, never mind a developed country. People who used to spend comfortably are becoming more cautious about spending and finding more ways to invest their money and increase their declining wealth.
Ignore money no more, joke about money no more, and procrastinate making money no more; the longer you delay earning decent money, the harder it will become to survive in this harsh modern age.
Live modern life decently, or die trying. Good luck!
