If I’m Going to Bitch, I Must Also Acknowledge. This is That.

And kindly, it’s about time.

This morning, not without trepidation, I checked my stats. For the first time in weeks they were rising again, swiftly, which means that at least in this area (in addition to returning the Friend link) the latest tinkering in the Engine That is Medium has begun to improve things.

If that’s happening for me, it must also be happening for others, which I’d like to hear about.

While I am sorry it took some strongly-worded complaints to Medium to get this underway, this is what I sincerely hope in the future:

MEDIUM. BEFORE YOU EMBARK ON ANOTHER SERIES OF NOT WELL THOUGHT OUT CHANGES WHICH CAN POTENTIALLY HAVE DISASTROUS IMPACTS ON THOSE WHO BUILT THIS INTO A $600M COMPANY, HOW ABOUT YOU BLOODY WELL ASK US FIRST?

I believe this will happen again, and again and again. No doubt. Because of that, as I said before, I am exploring other avenues. However, now that it’s clear that for the meantime, things seem to be returning to a semblance of normalcy (in other words, followers can follow, folks are getting notified of our work, and kindly, you and I can GET PAID the pittances our readers earn us), it’s also clear that this is highly like to reoccur.

I would hope with all sincerity that the folks at Medium, if the sting of criticism is as unpleasant for them as it is for those of us who care about our readers, they might have the good sense to poll the people who stand to lose the most when they fool with the system.

Such mistakes ruin good companies. For you can only undermine trust so many times before your top performers will go elsewhere. Business schools, business books, and history are chock-full of stories of corporations which gutted their best people and were gobsmacked when those people left for better treatment elsewhere.

In fact, Medium is also full of stories like that. If I might state the glaringly obvious, Medium might want to read its own excellent product.

Just saying.

Thanks then, for listening. Next time, do the research beforehand. You have a treasure trove of brilliance writing for you. To NOT ask those folks what they think, want, need and how best to serve them is to demonstrate a deep lack of respect for those who make Medium what it is: worth $600m.

Just saying.
