If I Weren’t a Writer I’d be An Event Planner

I love creating celebrations for people!

This article is in response to a writing challenge originally posed by Sherry McGuinn answering the question — “What would you be if you weren’t a writer?” I was tagged by Michele Thill and Mike Schoenhofer who both wrote very inspiring stories as well! Thank you to all three of you for the writing prompt and the tags to create my own story.

This year my heart has come back to writing. I am also a professional organizer, however as I work at this time to grow my business virtually I can also write and enjoy being part of the amazing Illumination community.

At the same time, I can see myself as an event planner, planning celebrations that bring joy to us all when we are able to get together in person again.

I have always loved to plan parties! In my family there were theme parties for everything. My grandma was famous for having parties for every single holiday, even labor day. I learned a lot from her. She was make amazing floral arrangements from flowers, leaves and moss from the woods near their home, always get out the punch bowl and decorations. My cousins and I would gather to play outside or in the basement and when called up would enjoy the amazing buffet of food brought by everyone. Some of my favorite parties were the hot-dog roasts where we’d gather by a fire pit, sit on logs, cook our hot dogs over the fire and then enjoy delicious picnic foods outside. Simple but so beautiful!

Over the years, starting in high school I started to host dinner parties and larger celebrations as well. I’ve planned everything from bridal showers to my parent’s 50th anniversary party. I find so much joy in planning celebrations. I love to make people feel loved, feel special, feel honored. One of my most favorite parties that I planned was one of my grandma’s birthdays right before she was 90 years old. It was such a joy to put together a special event for her. She was always so sweet, so kind and such a kindred spirit to me.

The love that she put into life was such a good example. I remember her joy of seeing the decorations, food and her favorite banana cake.

For several years now I have gathered my small group of friends for a friendship tea. I love this event because it’s a chance to thank my friends. I always bake a cook for the party, set out fresh flowers, brew tea, make punch and set the table with my grandma’s dishes and silverware. It’s so much fun that everyone brings food that they love to make- from salads to desserts. We get to enjoy each other’s company, toast to friendship and celebrate spring. This year because of the lockdown I am hoping to hold this party in the fall of this year.

As I write this it is fun to remember all of the celebrations we have hosted in our home and I love all of the fantastic memories we have created. We have hosted everything from birthday celebrations, my parent’s 40th anniversary, to barbecues, to a “squashapalooza” party where everyone brought pumpkin or squash dishes to share and there were prizes for the best ones.

It gives me so much joy (back when we had celebrations in our home) that people would love the parties and food so much that they would stay a long time. They felt welcome and relaxed in our home enough to stay for quite some time and enjoy each other’s company.

This is the feeling that I love, of being welcome, of being comfortable, of enjoying time together with others. This is something that I miss so much and I look forward to being able to host celebrations again in the future.

I love the idea of helping people create celebrations that speak to them and helps them celebrate milestones in life. I’d love to help create menus, help them choose decorations, venues and more. I’d be able to work with others with amazing talents such as caterers, bakers and more! I love working with others and I feel we’d form an amazing team.

Wishing you abundance, love and light today!

I’d like to challenge: Aurora Eliam, CMP and Kira Dawn to tell us who they’d be if they weren’t a writer. :)
