If I Started Upwork in 2024, I’d Do This

A decade of experience as a freelancer on Upwork, precisely 10 years since my first contract in March 2014.

Standing at the crossroads of my freelancing journey, I look back at the tumultuous path that led me here: from grappling with a $10k debt to finding my footing on platforms like Upwork.

In 2024, armed with lessons learned and insights gained, I’m ready to tackle Upwork anew.

This time, I have a blueprint for success carved out of past challenges and triumphs.

Let’s explore how I’d approach Upwork in 2024, ensuring a blend of strategic foresight and hard-earned wisdom to pave a smoother path.

Understanding the Marketplace

The digital freelance marketplace is a beast that never sleeps, constantly evolving with technology and market demands.

Reflecting on my initial struggles, from a dwindling Job Success Score to navigating financial uncertainties, I realize the importance of agility and market research.

A bad client isinevitable. I stumbled upon one in 2022 when I was also busy focusing on graduating from my studies. And it was uphill from there.

Anyway, in 2024, my first step would be a deep exploration into Upwork’s latest trends, technologies, and niches, aligning my offerings with the pulse of the platform.

There are a lot of changes on Upwork. From connect payment and Upwork fees to Jasper integration.

As freelancers, we need to adapt to the platform as it is, in my opinion, to this day, still the best one for freelancers.

Crafting a Magnetic Profile

Your profile is your digital storefront, and in my early days, I learned the hard way that a lackluster presentation doesn’t cut it.

Drawing from my architectural background, where every design element serves a purpose, I’d treat my Upwork profile as a masterpiece of personal branding.

This means showcasing my unique skills, experiences, and the architectural precision I bring to each project, all tailored to catch the eye of my ideal clients.

I tried creating an essay for my profile description, but it did not work.

In my mind, I want to share my expertise and experiences as much as possible, and nobody has read it!

Now, I only give out points about my skills and what I can offer in concise sentences.

Strategic Proposal Writing

When every application felt like a shot in the dark, I realized the importance of personalized, persuasive proposals.

In 2024, I’d leverage this wisdom, crafting proposals that speak directly to the client’s needs, highlighting how my architectural acumen and problem-solving prowess can turn their vision into reality.

No more generic pitches; each proposal would be a targeted solution, a lesson learned from past rejections.

Building Client Relationships

Past experiences taught me that freelancing is more than transactions; it’s about building relationships.

Moving forward, I’d prioritize clear communication, regular updates, and going above and beyond to exceed client expectations.

By nurturing these relationships, I aim to convert one-time projects into long-term partnerships, drawing from the resilience and adaptability I honed through my journey.

One new client once approached me about designing his house in South Carolina. And it becomes my great portfolio. I am proud of this project.

Continuous Learning and Adaptation

The freelancing landscape is perpetually shifting, and staying static is not an option.

Reflecting on my commitment to continuous learning — from mastering new design software to understanding the nuances of SEO — I plan to keep my skills sharp and relevant.

In 2024, this means staying ahead of the curve, investing in courses, and embracing new technologies that can enhance my freelancing toolkit.

Two weeks ago, I relearned about Revit Architecture, a new frontier in Building Information Modelling. I had to be an expert in my field.

Embarking on Upwork in 2024 with insights from my past — the struggles, the setbacks, and the victories — feels like stepping into familiar territory with a map in hand.

This journey isn’t just about avoiding previous pitfalls but about leveraging every lesson to build a thriving, sustainable freelancing career.

With a blend of strategy, skill, and a dash of architectural creativity, I’m ready to navigate the dynamic world of Upwork, poised for success.
