It Only Takes 7 Days to Build a Brand, Here’s What Day 1 Looks Like

If you want to build a personal brand but have no clue where to start, these 4 things help

This sample is from my 7 days of personal branding series on Substack.

Building a personal brand is no simple task, but day 1 is definitely the easiest!

The First Thing: What is the point?

This is the first question I’d ask any client…

Why are you doing this?

Is it money? Is it fulfillment? Is it fame?

The answer to this question will not only frame the how but also the what!

I’ll go ahead and burst this bubble now before you get too invested.

Money and fame are weak motivations…

Why? Well, because you won’t have either for a really long time. How can you get your energy up to do something you know won’t happen for a long time, IF it happens at all?

Fulfillment is a strong motivation…

Why? Simple — you can get it from day one, and it makes you fall in love with the process, not the results of the process.

So before you say you want to do this, make sure you have a good enough purpose. One that will help you persevere past the inevitable difficulties!

If money and fame do that for you, then they are fine reasons…

But they won’t be enough for most people.

The Second Thing: What is the endgame?

Let’s say that everything works out perfectly and your personal brand can get you any lifestyle you want… What does that lifestyle include?

For me, my endgame is

  • 1 bi-monthly vacation and/or beach house living (Get me out the US)
  • 2 dogs — 1 Samoyed and 1 Aussie
  • 1 or 2 kids
  • Excess money to invest
  • The option to retire before 35

That’s it. I don’t really want all that much, but freedom is expensive.

Once you have your list, go ahead and calculate what the math behind that looks like to get it in 1–10 years. I’ve already calculated it will be around $350,000 annually for the next 10 years to get where I want to be… yup

Then, break down the target income into annual goals. My current goal this year is to raise my income to $15,000 per month (rate of $180,000 annually).

“Shoot for the stars, land on the moon!”

My plan is aggressively paced to achieve my dream faster than 10 years.

That perfectly lines up the third thing…

The Third Thing: How much will you sacrifice?

All good things come at a cost… your sacrifice will come at the expense of speed and scope.

  • How fast do you want it? Fast, Slow, In-between
  • How much do you want? I want it all, not much, enough
  • What can you sacrifice? Time, Money, Sanity…

Do you have a job? Are you going to build your brand on the side?

Going to build your brand full-time? Are you okay with being broke for a while?

This is the part where my gloves come off…
