If I Could Only Recommend One Book, It Would Be This

An underrated book that no one is talking about

Have you ever read a book and thought, “Wow, this is incredible”?

You find yourself telling everyone you know about the story you read. You want to personally give your copy of the book to your family and friends, maybe even strangers.

That’s what happened when I read this book.

I’ve recommended a lot of books before. But if I could only pick one book out of the nearly 700 books I’ve read in my life that I would recommend to everyone, young and old, it would be this book:

Everyone’s An Alien When You’re An Alien Too by Jonny Sun

“The comforting thing about feeling lonely is that every thing that has ever existed also knows what loneliness feels like too. You may be sad because you are sad. It is ok to be sad. But if you are sad because happiness is fleeting, just remember that sadness is also fleeting too.” — One of my favorite quotes from Everyone’s An Alien When You’re An Alien Too

As soon as I finished this book, I couldn’t stop talking about it. There was an electrifying excitement surrounding the story for me. I wanted to share the book with almost everyone I knew in the hopes that it could move them as well. I passed it to my parents, my siblings, and my friends. I wanted all of them to read it.

The story follows a lonely alien who visits earth to observe the world and the creatures in it. Along the way, he learns about different perspectives on life, love, and happiness from the earthlings he meets.

Why I recommend this book

There are so many great books in the world that I love. But nothing quite captured my heart like this one. And it’s one that I haven’t heard anyone else talk about.

At first glance, this book may seem juvenile, as it includes lots of illustrations and uses simple language. But, it actually goes a lot deeper and talks about philosophy, loneliness, and the fleeting feeling of happiness. In this way, the story can be read by kids and adults.

Another reason that I love this story is because it has elements of fiction and nonfiction. The book is fiction with a dash of space (which is totally my favorite thing). And yet, it also teaches you lessons and makes you pause and think about your perspective on the world like a nonfiction book would.

If you’re not a big reader, this is also a very approachable book and easy to pick up. It’s about 250 pages, and it has illustrations to break up the text. I read the book in one day, and many of my friends did as well.

I also think the book has a great reread quality. I have come back to this book many times. Each time I revisit the book, I appreciate it even more.

In summary, there are many reasons I love this book. I would recommend the book because it…

  • can be appreciated by children and adults
  • has elements of fiction and nonfiction
  • is short and approachable for people who aren’t big readers
  • has adorable illustrations
  • has a great reread quality

Some of the wisdom in this book blew me away, completely unexpectedly. If you enjoyed the popular children’s classic The Little Prince, you probably would like this one as well. It has similar story components and messages.

I recommend this book because I absolutely love it. It’s one that I think a lot of people could gain something from if they read it. I also chose Everyone’s An Alien When You’re An Alien Too because it is severely underrated. I didn’t want to share a book that everyone has already heard of (and read).

Of course, it’s impossible to find one book that is universally appreciated by everyone. Each person reads and interprets a book in their own way. I know some people might not like it. They could pick it up and not like the writing style or find it too cheesy. And that’s okay.

But this is still one of my favorite books. And it’s now become my go-to recommendation. And if I had the impossible task of only recommending one book to everyone, it would be this one.
