If I Could Do Anything, I’d Start a War
A Battle Against Societal Ills
Shall I declare, a notion oh so bold, To yearn for war, a statement misunderstood. Not blades that clash, nor hearts that grow cold, But a grand battle for the collective good.
“If I could do anything, I’d start a war,” A war on greed, a war on hate, on lies, That plague our earth and haunt its very core. A noble quest ‘neath the observing skies.
The soldiers here are truth, love, empathy, Their armor was forged from education’s gold. Against the shadows of apathy, In this war, a new world we’ll mold.
So, join this fight, for it’s our part to play, In this war for change, to light a brighter day.
This poem, “If I Could Do Anything, I’d Start a War,” is a symbolic call to arms against the opposing forces affecting society. I used “war” to represent a collective struggle or conflict, but not in the literal sense of physical combat. Instead, the war symbolizes the fight against greed, hate, and lies.
The first two lines prepare the reader for a provocative idea: wanting to start a war. But I swiftly clarify that this isn’t a call for physical violence but a battle for the “collective good.”
In the second quatrain, the war is defined: it’s a war on negative human traits such as greed, hate, and deceit. These traits are seen as the enemies that undermine the welfare of society and the planet.
The third quatrain identifies the “soldiers” in this metaphorical war, embodying truth, love, and empathy. They are protected by the “armor” of education, suggesting the importance of knowledge and learning in the battle against apathy and indifference.
Finally, I call the readers to action in the closing couplet. It’s an appeal for all to participate in this ‘war for change’ to shape a better future, symbolized by a “brighter day.”
This sonnet can be seen as a poetic plea for social change and improvement. It uses the war metaphor to emphasize the need for concerted efforts against the destructive forces of greed, hate, and lies. The poem promotes the values of truth, love, empathy, and education as the necessary tools for effecting this change.
