If building a website is as simple as AI-generated, why do we still need UX designers?
A few days ago, I was in a meeting with the stakeholders of the non-profit organization I volunteer for, discussing the redesign of their website. 😑 Among the stakeholders was an individual with extensive IT experience whose insights carried significant weight in our decision-making process.
To my surprise, this stakeholder effortlessly created a brand new AI-generated site in just a few clicks during the meeting, earning a round of applause. 😕The website building process simply become “use this structure — add some content — good to go”.
While the AI-generated site had essential sections to present features, it lacked elements of branding and did little to enhance usability. 🧐It got me thinking: if whipping up a website is as easy as this stakeholder made it seem, do we even need UX designers anymore?
Well, the short answer is YES.
But why?
Building a website aims to increase online presence for businesses, and a UX designer plays a crucial role in ensuring that products and services meet the needs and expectations of users.
Here’s what a UX designer can do that AI cannot:
- Understanding Your Audience: When we’re in design mode, we’ve got your end-users front and center in our minds. We dig into their needs, behaviors, and preferences as real, live humans. We ensure that products/websites/services address their needs and solve their problems effectively.
- Creating Seamless Interactions: We’re all about making the dance between users and the product as smooth and intuitive as a well-practiced tango. Less frustration, more user satisfaction — that’s the goal.
- Considering Accessibility and Inclusivity: We consider the diverse needs of users, including those with disabilities. By incorporating accessibility principles into the design process, we ensure that products and services are usable by a wide range of people.
- Aligning with Business Goals: We understand your business goals and align the user experience with these objectives. This ensures that the design not only meets user needs but also contributes to the overall success of the business.
So, while AI might make website building a breeze, the human touch of a UX designer brings a level of understanding, focus on seamless interactions, consideration for accessibility, and alignment with business goals that you just can’t get from a few clicks.
The website game might be changing, but the importance of a UX designer? Still as crucial as ever.
