A Book Review

“Idiot” by Laura Clery

People can change

Photo by Frederick Tubiermont on Unsplash

It’s hard to make me laugh. Not that I don’t have a sense of humor, just that my humor is dark, gross, and at times depraved. One minute, I’m giving out a painful dad joke, and the next, I’m making a wickedly dark reference to current events.

So when something makes me literally laugh out loud, I need to show everyone and their mother the book, movie, or video.

Enter Laura Clery

I stumbled upon her one day while scrolling through Facebook. The video was titled Me Trying to Flirt, and a square-faced woman is saying overly offensive pick-up lines to her husband. I couldn’t get enough of her and watched as many videos as possible.

I watched sketch after sketch she made on YouTube, and I suspect she did a video with her husband about American vs. British English years before she went viral. I watched the creative sketches she came up with as she revealed her pregnancy and the birth of her son.

When I think something’s funny, I don’t always laugh at it. A lot of times, I’ll watch with a goofy smile on my face and force other people to watch it. But when I watched Laura Clery, most of her videos made me literally laugh out loud.

And then she revealed she wrote a book

I had to get that book. It didn’t matter if it happened on my birthday, Christmas, or a day I found myself in Heaven. Heaven is Barnes and Noble. Luckily, my fiance saw how much I wanted to get my hands on it and bought it for me.

I finished the book in two days.

What’s the book about?

Laura Clery writes about her life. From being a middle schooler who loved finding unexpected places to pee in public to battling her drug addiction to being a successful YouTube creator.

If she talked about her drug addiction in past videos, it’s news to me. I started getting into her videos around the time the Me Trying to Flirt videos became popular, and I watched all her funny sketches.

When she started promoting her book, she started talking about how it’s about her battle with addiction, up and saying that she should be dead! But as I read it, she made her reason for writing the book clear.

“The point of this book is to articulate that people have the capacity to change.” - Laura Clery

Her theme of change is everywhere in the book. Every person she mentions goes through a transformation. She talks about her own journeys going through a change.

It’s clear Laura has a level of faith in people’s ability to change, and readers can’t help but feel her hope through her words. Readers can’t help but hope that any and every person that she introduces who have the same struggles as her are able to overcome them.

I laughed at parts and felt myself tearing up through other parts. I could feel her emotions through her words. It’s not a long read, but I enjoyed it.
