Ice Fishing in New Jersey 2024

New Jersey has had one of the coldest winters in years. Safe ice for recreational activities is flourishing in the icy Garden State. Although the length of the ice fishing season in the state can vary greatly from year to year, January has been extremely fulfilling. Freezing temperatures arriving in late December resulted in safe ice forming across the NJ waterways. With a safety measurement of a minimum thickness for ice at 4 inches, individual anglers are thriving here. Notably, underwater springs and areas around docks often result in thinner ice pockets which are to be avoided.
Large waterways provide a diversity of fishing opportunities. Many lakes that are state-owned permit ice-fishing activities. Municipal or county-owned properties often have a variety of regulations.
A few of the most popular northern New Jersey lakes now offering ice fishing for enjoyment include:
- Sussex County: Cranberry, Jefferson, Aeroflex, Hopatcong, Musconetcong, Swartswood, Little Swartswood and Wawayanda.
- Passaic County: Greenwood, Pompton, Shepherd, Green Turtle Pond and Monksville Reservoir.
- Morris County: Budd Lake.
- Warren County: Furnace, White, Mountain, Delaware and Deer Park Pond.
- Hunterdon County: Spruce Run Reservor
