I Wrote My First $100 Story. Here’s What It Took.
If I can do it, so can you
As I opened my laptop, my jaw dropped. A beaming smile formed on my face.
It had happened.
I’d written my first $100 article on Medium.
This is how it went down.
The story
Honestly, it felt like any other post to me. I’ve been posting twice daily for about the past month or so.
I wrote the story in mid-January. But it started to gain some momentum in February.

I woke up to check Medium one morning and noticed that people were commenting on and clapping for this one story.
It seemed pretty random to me. For whatever reason, a story from a few weeks back was blowing up.
The boost
I poked around my published stories and noticed a little icon. It indicated that Medium had boosted this story.
Feelings of pride coursed through my veins. It was amazing to see that my work was receiving some recognition.
I honestly don’t think this was one of my best pieces of work. It’s interesting how that works out.
I’ve talked about this before, but there’s a level of randomness to what works and what doesn’t. That makes it exciting. If it were all linear, it wouldn’t be as interesting.
It’s subjective. What I feel is some of my best work doesn’t land with my audience. And sometimes, work that I don’t find to be great seems to resonate with people.
It can’t be predicted.
How I got here
So, I can’t exactly say how I was able to get my first story boosted.
There’s a level of luck involved.
But here are 4 things that I’ve been doing that led to this moment:
- Writing stories every day (often 2x)
- Reading and engaging with other writers’ work on Medium
- Reading books and blogs to improve my work
- Analyzing my Medium data
Writing my first $100 Medium post was incredible.
There’s something about making money on your own that’s addictive. It makes me feel independent and free.
I will continue to put my work out there and hope to make a living from this.
