I Wrote a Children’s Book Before Lunch

With the help of ChatGPT and Dall-E

I searched all over the internet for the PDF of an appropriate children’s book for my lesson in class last Thursday.

I couldn’t find one anywhere.

Currently my students are in a Unit called “To the Rescue.” The unit started as an exploration of superheroes and what made them super. Now we are learning about everyday superheroes and the lesson of the day was:

Mom is a superhero.

My Book’s Cover

I found a few books about Moms being superheroes but all those pesky book authors wanted money for them.

I know right, what the hell.

So what is a procrastinating preschool teacher to do?

Go to ChatGPT and turn on the Dall-E feature and get to work. I started with this prompt:

Help ChatGPT I am a terrible teacher…

After the initial script ChatGPT asked if I would like to produce the images. I said yes. It created a series of images.

Image #1

They all looked great but there was a problem. They were all different characters.

Image #2

This has been the biggest struggle with using Dall-E or Midjourney to create characters and put them in stories. They inconsistently create different characters.

I pivoted. I changed the story to “All Moms are Supermoms” That way each mom in the image could be different.

Page 1 of the finished book

It was a simple change that made the story even better. Now I could tie in the fact that each student’s mom is super too.

Brilliant

Why have an underlying character and then fight with the AI to reproduce them when the story is better if it’s all different characters.

Page 2 of the Finished book

I opened a Google Slide and began formatting my slide show. I rushed to complete the story while the students were in snack time and then uploaded it onto the smart board in the classroom.

Page 3 of the finished book

Once the students were finished eating I sat them down and beta tested my story.

Turns out some of the dialogue was clunky.

It was cool to see what worked and what didn’t in real time. Some of the areas of the story really resonated with the children and some just meh.

Once the children went outside for outdoor time I rushed back to Google Slides and made a few alterations. I simplified the dialogue and made a choral element where at the end of each page all the children said something like “go supermom” or “thanks supermom”

Page 5 of the finished book

By the time the children were in line to go to lunch I had a complete story ready to show during my afternoon lesson.

Page 6 of the finished book

ChatGPT is incredible for things like this. I am not rushing to monetize this story. That would be a violation of Dall-E’s agreements. Besides anyone can create stories like this. I am just grateful that I have the option to create them when I need them to use as a teaching tool in class.

The final page of my book

We live in a powerful time and I am having fun learning about all the possibilities AI has to offer.
