I Wrote 100 Articles Before I Figured Out Writing On Medium

What I learned about how to write attention-grabbing articles

Imagine made by Author with Leonardo.AI

It was before anyone started to care about my words.

A constant struggle for the survival of my account.

I’d write for 2 weeks, take a break for 1, and get back again.

Motivation was a hard resource to come by.

Writing now feels natural…It feels exhilarating, I never want to give up on it.

It is my way of transmitting emotions and values. (with the nice benefit of some money)

How I got here still amazes me. But if I could bet on something…

I Would Bet on Passion Every Day

Find a purpose and the rest will follow.

  • We all write for someone or something.
  • We want results without the fear of facing consequences.
  • When we put in the work we expect an outcome immediately.

But what happens when you forget your purpose?

It’s like losing your compass in the middle of the jungle. Awful.

But there’s one thing you can’t lose.

And that’s the passion that you started.

It might diminish but never go away.

Think of all the times when you experienced the dopamine boost.

Right after doing something you love (something healthy I hope).

The only way to survive publishing for a long time is to stick to your gut. What does it tell you?

If it says to keep going. Listen to it.

Your mind will be the one telling you to stop. Don’t get frustrated with it.

It’s just a way to protect you from sadness, anger, or other unpleasant feelings.

Your passion is the motive that you started. It is a subconscious desire. Keep it in your heart and never let it go.

Always address a pain point

Understanding the game of writing online is understanding bees and wasps.

Yes, I know, I know, we all hate wasps. But we love bees, right?

Bees sting you but they give you honey.

Wasps sting you and give you nothing in return.

BEE like a bee, sting your readers with their problems.

In return, you NEED to give them honey. The solution.

It’s the single most important framework you can use when writing an article.

Up until now, my writing was decent. But readers didn’t get anything from it.

Always ask yourself: “If I came across my article what would I get?”

If you can’t answer with something valuable, a lesson or a guide…

Then you need to rethink the whole thing.

The headline is 80% of the whole article

Famous copywriter, David Ogily:

“On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.”

I didn’t KNOW it until I saw the problem. Lack of views and clicks.

And all this time I focused on the wrong thing:

I tried making my body better when in fact the headline needed adjustments.

What can you do to make sure you never run out of good headline ideas?

  • Install the Chrome extension: Medium Any Author Stats
  • Go to the profile of people in your niche
  • See what got the most claps and comments (because those have the highest views as well)
  • Write in a document or on paper the FRAMEWORK that they used.
  • Next time you get an idea, try to fit it into any of those frameworks

Here are my stats:

As a Bonus. Here are 5 easy to copy headline templates:

  • “[X] [Things] That [Brought Me Benefit]”
  • “[Superlative] Benefit you can get out of [Doing X]”
  • “[X] Made Easy.”
  • “{optional: number} Essential [things] for [Topic/dream outcome]”
  • “[number~related to dream outcome] In [time period]. Yes, It’s possible.”

Ex: 1000$ in One Month Using This Simple Technique. Yes, It’s possible.

But after doing everything that depended on us writing a good article.

There is still a piece of the puzzle missing:

Medium is still a social platform.

And don’t you forget it!

It’s still important to consider that your work is not read by an algorithm.

It’s read by people.

That’s why I found it so important to:

  • Engage more with other writers.
  • Respond to every comment where I can help. (not only my own)
  • Always support fellow writers by clapping and leaving comments

But that’s only if I found the article useful.

It encourages and forms a sense of community.

A medium where writers feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas

Somewhere we belong.

Always sharing.

Always creating.

Always coming out with new ideas to enrich our lives.

Thanks for reading!
