I worked for 122 Days In Total Isolation
3 reasons why I will not do it again
It was the summer of 2023 and I had decided that I would lock myself inside for 3 months and only concentrate on my goals.
I had set myself a deadline that by the end of the 3 months and wanted to hit 10K in revenue for my business.
Initially, the idea sounded sweet like cookies dipped in milk but things started going south by the time I hit the 40-day mark.
I had no social contact and rarely did I see the sun. My body started to give me the signs that this would not be the best long-term solution to fulfil my goals.
Here are 3 reasons I would not do so again.
1. Personal Well-Being:
Working in isolation can take a toll on personal well-being.
The absence of daily interactions with colleagues may lead to feelings of loneliness and impact your mental health.
Social connections at work often contribute to a sense of belonging, and the lack of these interactions may affect your overall satisfaction and happiness.
Although I did not have the feeling that I was lonely, I did see drops in my productivity.
This was mainly because I did not have anyone to discuss my decisions with, whether I was taking the right actions or not.
2. Challenges In Communication:
Effective communication becomes more challenging in isolated work environments.
Relying on digital communication tools may lead to misunderstandings or a lack of clarity.
The absence of non-verbal cues and the immediacy of in-person communication can result in delayed responses and a potential breakdown in the flow of information.
I realised that after the 3 months, I did have difficulty communicating face-to-face with the people around me.
3. Difficulty in Resolving Conflicts:
Social isolation can complicate conflict resolution.
In an office setting, face-to-face interactions allow for more immediate and nuanced discussions to address conflicts.
Working in isolation may lead to delays in resolving issues, as communication is primarily digital and may lack the subtleties needed for effective conflict resolution.
This was my biggest problem in this period, the issues that arose were very difficult to solve.
I did not see the problems through my client's eyes and it took me some time to self-reflect and figure out what the best course of action would have been.
While working in isolation provides flexibility, it’s essential to recognize the personal challenges that come with it.
From the impact on personal well-being and limited networking opportunities to challenges in seeking mentorship and difficulties in maintaining work-life balance.
Understanding these personal drawbacks is crucial for creating a healthy and sustainable work environment tailored to your individual needs.
As you navigate remote work, finding ways to address these personal challenges becomes integral to fostering a positive and fulfilling work experience.
