I Won’t Take A COVID Vaccine That Is Rushed
If the vaccine developed by Russia was the only one available, I would pass
We need a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine. It is one of the sure-fire ways we can return to some semblance of normality after the scourge of this pandemic. We need to protect our population from this vaccine to avoid hundreds of thousands, if not millions of more deaths from this virus. We need a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine.
As a healthcare professional on the front lines fighting this pandemic, it is likely that I may be one of the first groups of people who will get this vaccine. Indeed, every year it is mandatory that I get the flu vaccine, and I faithfully get one every single year. With that being said, if a vaccine comes out in a total rush without good phase 3 data, I will not take the vaccine, even if is against COVID-19.
Russia has approved a vaccine for COVID-19. It was rushed. There is no phase 3 data. They didn’t even publish the data from phase one or two. There is no way I would take the Russian vaccine. No way.
A phase 3 trial is a large study that randomizes thousands of people into two groups: one gets the vaccine and one a harmless placebo. Then, they monitor those people to see if they get the infection or any side effects from the vaccine. This is the most robust way to ensure any vaccine is safe and effective.
There is no way I trust this vaccine from Russia is safe and effective. Dr. Anthony Fauci said the same thing: “I hope that the Russians have actually definitively proven that the vaccine is safe and effective. I seriously doubt they’ve done that.”
If this was the only vaccine available for COVID-19, I would definitely pass.
When I first reviewed the published results of the RNA vaccine, I wasn’t much interested in whether it can induce antibodies. I was sure it was effective in doing so. I was most interested in looking at the side effect profile: how much toxicity did this vaccine cause? That is most important to me. Yes, a vaccine that induces a strong immune response is important. If, however, in doing so it causes significant toxicity, then it is not worth it; at least, not worth it for me.
We really do need a safe and effective vaccine for COVID-19. The lives of thousands, if not millions, of people, depend on it. There has to be, however, a clear demonstration that the vaccine is indeed safe and effective. If we rush the process to win some imaginary race for the first vaccine, we are putting thousands, if not millions, of people at risk. If that is what happens with the COVID-19 vaccine, then count me out.
