I Wonder, How Many Medium Pub Owners Consider Themselves Entrepreneurs
Hobby or Business; Curious Minds Want to know!

As I get ready to launch my two publications this month, I keep thinking about my short-term and long-term goals. I want to provide something of quality to the readers while preserving my creative flair. I am both nervous and excited to debut my first pubs, but it is an inner calling I can no longer ignore.
Pondering further, I began considering how far I wanted to go as a personal publication owner. Will this simply be for fun, a hobby, or will I treat my new creations like a business focusing on growth and productivity?
Hmmm…
Then, another thought came to mind. How many Medium pub owners consider themselves entrepreneurs? 🤔
It is a valid question; curious minds want to know!
Did you know that as of November 30, 2021, there were an estimated 10,781 active Medium publications?
Whew- that is a whole lot of pubs. I can only imagine the current number.
To think of a social publishing platform home to a mix of writers, from the newbie fresh out of the starting gates to the established professional writer housed under one roof, is pretty amazing! 🤩
Indeed, Medium has something for everyone; readers seeking personal or professional advice, poetry, health and mental health-related articles, personal essays, short fiction; you name it, Medium has it! 🤩
It’s no surprise that many hopeful writers, seasoned and novice, have opened pubs. Medium provides the space for creators to get their thoughts out there, gaining experience as published authors.
But is it all for fun, or are pub owners thinking like business owners?
First, let’s define “business.”
According to Oxford Languages, a business is a person’s regular occupation, profession, or trade.
It makes sense; easy enough
Next, let’s probe further
What legally defines a business?
According to the Legal Law Dictionary, a business is any enterprise or activity entered for profit. Furthermore, a business does not require formal organization or need to be a company; sizing can range from one person to a corporation.
Well, I guess that eliminates all the guesswork!
When we explore the definition of business further with Merriam-Webster, we can say that a business entails the activity of making, buying, and selling goods or services.
So, keeping the above in mind, I wonder how many Medium pub owners consider themselves entrepreneurs? 🤔
Of course, entrepreneurs are business owners.
And if a business can range in any size from one to, let’s say, a gazillion, then I can imagine that Medium houses thousands of entrepreneurs, right?
I suppose what it all comes down to is a personal perspective.
Are the majority of pub owners here for fun, practice for future endeavors, or are they, serious-minded business owners?
Curiosity sometimes gets the best of me, yet curious minds want to know!
Perhaps the answer lies in the individual goals of the writer/publication owner.
Points to Ponder
🎯 Is a Medium pub simply a personal blog, public diary, and free space for emotional release?
🎯 Is a Medium pub a hobby? — I only write for fun
🎯 Is a Medium pub a stepping stone, a resume builder for future employment?
🎯 Is a Medium pub a place for me to provide a service, advice, entertainment, or product knowledge while earning either part-time or full-time income?
🎯 Is a Medium pub a place for me to expand other business-related ideas?
As you can see, the above questions may help one determine their current or long-term plan as a pub owner.
I think there is a multitude of perspectives, and all are fine.
Still, the curiosity in me wants to know, how many Medium Pub owners consider themselves entrepreneurs?
Please let me know. What are your thoughts?
As for me, I plan to become an entrepreneur while having fun. I have a vision for my two debuting pubs(which break out this month) and hope to provide a service for readers while enjoying myself, learning, and earning money.
How much? 💰
Who knows, but I am ready to find out! 😊
