I Wish Some Black Women Would Have Higher Self-Esteem

The way black women are conditioned is sick.

I watched a YouTube live stream today about cultural appropriation.

The black woman in the stream talked about black women rappers handing the culture to non-black women on a silver platter.

For example, Nicki Minaj did a remix with a newer non-black female rapper named BIA. I had no idea she wasn’t black. I only knew her from that song Nicki hopped on.

Another example is Cardi B. She’s not black, yet I’ve seen tons of black women entertainers gush over getting a chance to collaborate with her.

Some black women don’t care about black culture enough to gatekeep. I can live with that. But there’s another piece to the low self-esteem puzzle that some black women have.

If you didn’t know before, Nicki Minaj and her husband, Kenneth Petty are in deep water right now.

Essentially, they’ve been harassing the alleged sexual assault victim of Kenneth Petty, Jenifer Hough, online. Nicki married a trash-ass man. It still baffles me that she has all the money and access in the world, yet chose to settle down with that.

I’ve had glimpses of this low self-esteem with other black women in my personal life.

One of my old friends from high school sobbed at homecoming. She felt embarrassed she never had a boyfriend before. This led to some freaky stuff. A couple of weeks pass and I see her playing a long game of tonsil hockey with this big, unattractive white dude in the hallway.

I’ve seen black women in my family have relationships with high-profile men and downgrade to trash human beings.

Why does this happen?

Where does this low self-esteem come from?

I have a few theories:

  1. Black women are conditioned to put everyone else before ourselves
  2. Society tells black women that we are the lowest on the totem pole and we internalize it
  3. Some black women weren’t fortunate enough to have parents tell them their value

How do we fix this?

Well, I’m not society so there’s only so much I can do as an individual. But I’m here to remind black women of their value.

Did you know the first person on earth was a black woman? Did you know we created rock music and damn near every other genre? Did you know we’re the blueprint for all of these white women to copy off?

Everyone wants a black woman’s body nowadays. Everyone else should have low-self esteem, not black women. I can’t imagine being anything else but a black woman.

I don’t feel the need to date a scrub because I’m worth more than that. I’ve set high goals for myself to accomplish because I KNOW I will accomplish them. I’m not insecure about my body because everyone is trying to mimic it.

Who do we have to be jealous of?

No one.

Black women — never settle.

We have our whole lives ahead of us. I want all of us to win. So let’s get out there and live our best lives.
