I Wish I Were a Bird
A poem
I wish I were a bird to make my home as far away as my breast can beat to have feet as light as tears — unquestioning as a mother’s embrace
oh, how I wish I were a bird to have my only worry to be breathless over the sea and no near tree for respite
If I were a bird my wings would be spun of pure ether and unhatched light would be my offspring — in rapture we would be
would it be absurd that if I were a bird My throat would be a woodwind instrument and the words I speak silver waters
my blood would play the keys of a lullaby upon my heart my cup to drink, a tulip my bowl to eat, the cosmos when it rains I’d hear sweet music and the missing voices of my kin miles away and then, as a bird when I take flight
I would be so light as to be no burden upon the air and carry breaths of wind as my purse filled with the perfume of lilacs
If I were a bird Oh, I wish I were a bird
