I Will Add 5,000 Followers in 2024, and You Can Follow the Journey
Do you know anyone whose favorite holiday of the entire year is New Year’s Day? If not, now you do. I love it, and not for the same reasons that people often love it. I am not a party person, and I will probably be in bed by around 8–9pm on New Year’s Eve, but I still love this milestone holiday. My primary reason for loving it is because it offers the perfect reason to take up new goals and resolutions. It is a fresh turn of the page and a great place to begin building a better you.
It is true that many resolutions are abandoned long before they come to fruition, and I am certainly guilty of this myself, but I still have a plan for the upcoming year. Let’s start by taking a look at where we are today (12/30/23):
I have exactly 251 followers at the time of this writing
I have published 6 pieces that are part of the Partner Program
I have a full-time office job (that I just began this week)
The reason I include this last point is simply to say that I will have to write pieces outside of regular business hours. I know there are other Medium authors who famously do this, and I would love to have my name in the same sentence with some of these titans of industry someday.
Why 5,000 New Followers?
First, let me just say that I will NOT be including any new followers or stories added today or tomorrow (which is still technically 2023). I will only be including new followers added beginning midnight 1/1/24 until 11:59pm EST on 12/31/24.
So, why am I shooting for 5,000 new followers in 2024? Well, obviously it is a nice round number and that makes it both a desirable goal and also easy to track your progress against. However, even beyond that, I would like to see at least 5,000 new followers added to my count in 2024 because this appears to be a level at which writers on the platform gain the kind of traction that I am hoping to see.
I have personally reviewed plenty of posts and compared the level of interaction on some of those posts to the level of interaction seen on other posts. Obviously, there are certain posts that go absolutely viral even if the author doesn’t have a significant following on the platform. However, those are typically one-off posts, and that is not what I am attempting to generate for myself here. Instead, I am hopeful for a consistent and relatively high level of interaction based on my own personal goals and expectations. For me, that number seems to come in around the 5,000-follower mark.
I Want Authentic Connections
Just like the hero of any well-written romance novel, I want the connections that I make with others to be authentic. For example, I recently discovered this account which seems highly interesting and like the kind of person I would want to check in on regularly: https://medium.com/@BoysieG
However, I also know that it is impossible to have deep and meaningful connections with 5,000 people on a single platform. Even on my own personal social media accounts I tend to only count about 150 or so friends or connections. Even then, I don’t keep in perfect touch with all of them of course.
All of that being said, I believe that it is possible to create strong back and forth connections with some percentage of the people who do you the honor of following your posts. Therefore, I intend to devote a significant amount of my time to building connections with authors whose work I find value in. Hopefully that includes you dear reader!
How This Breaks Down Statistically
When setting goals it is best to be realistic with yourself. When some read that I am aiming for 5,000 new followers, they might immediately discount this as a goal that is well beyond my reach. After all, I only have 251 followers at the moment. However, I decided to break it down statistically to give myself an idea of what I need to accomplish.
There are 365 days in a calendar year, and technically 366 this year as it is a leap year. However, I would be fooling myself if I believed that I was going to write and connect with others every single day of the year. That is a goal that would stretch me too far and ultimately lead to failure. So, right off the bat, I want to throw out a full 100 days from the calendar year.
Throwing out 100 days helps me account for holidays, sick days, and days when I simply don’t have the motivation or the time to get on the keyboard and create content for all of you. Thus, we are left with 266 days in 2024 to work with. Let’s see how that breaks out:
5,000 new followers/266 working days = 18.79 new followers added per day on average.
I have found that I can generally add anywhere from 10–25 new followers per 60–90 minutes of time spent writing, commenting, and socializing with users on the platform. To me, that means that I will want to devote at least 90 minutes per day for each working day of the year to reach my goals. If I can pull off more than that, then great. However, I think that I can find 90 minutes of time for 266 days out of the year in 2024.
You Can Follow the Progress
Not every single post that I make will be about my progress on this goal (that would be boring for everyone, myself included!). However, I will do regularly updates on my progress and the challenges and hurdles that I run into along the way.
I know that the goal that I have created for myself is an ambitious one, and it is not the only resolution that I am making to myself for 2024. Could I fall short? There is every chance in the world. But….. If I pull it off I will have reached a target that was seemingly impossible when I got started, and that is a reward all by itself!
