I went to Costa Rica — These are my highlights
I’d dreamed of Costa Rica for several years prior to my visit last month, and you can see some of my favourite shots of the local wildlife in a past post here.
But, after all that wanting and anticipation, what actually were the highest highs? From hiking and ziplining to snorkeling and tree planting, I did so much that it’s hard to choose. However, below I’ve somehow narrowed it down to 5 amazing experiences.
5. The Butterfly Garden
I visited Spirogyra Butterfly Garden during my day in San Jose, and it was magical. Arriving early for the opening was definitely key, as I had the whole place to myself until a little later on. Seeing the vivid array of colours and shapes fluttering around me made me feel like a real fairy-tale princess!
4. A Chocolate Tour
The tour of a local cacao plantation was not only interesting, but also downright hilarious. Our host was, in short, a riot! Demonstrations, jokes, interactive activities, sexy dancing and full encouragement of unlimited chocolate tasting made for an all-around fantastic morning. And we caught a glimpse of a sloth in one of the trees!
3. Crocodile Safari
Part of what made the riverboat crocodile safari so special was its very unplanned nature of it. Most activities were on my itinerary before I even left England, but this was a wildcard I’m so glad was on offer. Not only was it fantastic seeing real-life crocodiles, but the whole area is an absolute haven for avian life, with all kinds of birds constantly surrounding you at every angle.
2. The People
Once in Costa Rica itself, I joined a group tour with around 30 under 35's, and honestly, it would not have been the same without them. Getting to know so many fantastic people and sharing so many stories all in one place is something I wouldn’t trade for the world. Every single person on this trip was great and very welcoming, which in itself is awfully refreshing.
1. Wild Monkey Encounters
Despite all the activities and attractions on offer throughout Costa Rica, my number one highlight has to be an unassuming forest trail behind my hotel in Monteverde, where I and a small handful of others were suddenly surrounded by a group of playful capuchin monkeys, leaping and swinging and sailing by our heads. To be immersed in something so exciting, beautiful and intimidating at the same time was simply incredible.
