I Can Watch Fans Cheering Captain America All Day

This is my go-to YouTube video for when I’m feeling meh

The pandemic has really been getting me down. One minute I’m emotionally fine, the next I’m morbidly depressed.

It’s just exhausting — I tried to go to the Jersey Shore the other day and half the boardwalk was maskless. I’m not a hysteric about COVID-19 but I’m pretty sure ice cream and laughter don’t obliterate the plague. I was angry at the people who weren’t taking precautions and I was angry at myself for being angry at people eating ice cream and laughing.

This has been a long grim season of loss. I miss my family. I miss my friends. I miss walking and talking and not giving a fuck. And most of all, I miss going to the movies. I miss the energy of crowds, sitting in the dark.

So sometimes when I need a little pick me up I press play on this clip of a live audience watching the climactic final moments of Marvel’s epic masterpiece Avengers: Endgame. I’m particularly fond of the moment when Thor’s mighty hammer Mjolnir flies into the hands of a beaten, but not beaten down, Steve Rogers. Captain America, Brooklyn-born super-soldier and corny nice guy, is as worthy to wield a divine weapon as the God of Thunder.

There are actually multiple videos on YouTube of nerds losing their minds as Earth’s mightiest heroes fight the evil hordes of Thanos. This Twitter thread has some pretty good audience reactions too — the moment T’Challa steps through the portal is especially moving. The collective noises are joyful and electric and, most of all, human.
