Summary

A high school student aspiring to create publications on Medium was disappointed to find out that only paying members can create publications, which is a barrier due to the inability to afford the membership fee.

Abstract

The author of the article had planned to launch two new Medium publications, one focused on "Entrepreneurship etc." and the other on "News," with the intention of encouraging themselves to write more frequently. Despite being inspired by successful Medium creators, the author faced a setback when they discovered that Medium requires a membership to create a publication. This revelation was disheartening as the author, a high school student, cannot afford the subscription fee. The author reached out to Medium for an alternative but was informed that the ability to create publications is limited to paid members. Despite this, the author remains determined to find a way to achieve their goals on Medium and invites readers to offer solutions or follow their work if they relate to the author's situation.

  • The author expresses a preference for writing over reading on the platform and questions the value of a membership for someone who reads infrequently.
  • The author seeks community support and engagement by asking readers for advice and encouraging them to follow their Medium profile.

I Was Going To Make a Publication, but Medium Didn’t Allow Me

The changes medium should reverse

Yesterday I was thinking about making two publications, one related to “Entrepreneurship etc.” and another one for “News”, I was planning everything for the publications like what will I do with the publications and how will I expand it.

I was glad to make this decision because it will also encourage me to write more, As you can see from my profile, I’ve published only 5 stories in a year, I think I wasn’t writing because I was surrounded by other creators like Tim Denning, Tom Kuegler, Zulie Rane (also watch her monthly income reports on YouTube) and many more people having a lot of success and earning a lot of money, they can be demotivating sometimes, despite the fact that they are a source of motivation for us — — Sorry for the extras

So I sat on my chair and started designing the logos for the publications, after some time I have designed the logos and also selected colors for the publications to use.

Then, when I entered my profile and clicked on “create new publication”, Medium membership subscription page appeared and asked to join Medium membership if you want to make your own publication and all my dreams broke into pieces.

Then I mailed Medium that “Can I make a publication without being subscribed to the membership” and they replied that “We’ve set a limit on the amount of publications that can be created, and only paid members can do so” and I was hurt even more.

I am a high school student who cannot afford the monthly subscription fee, But even if I could afford it, I would still not buy it because I am here to write not to read, I hardly read 2 to 3 stories a month which medium allows for free.

Last words

After this problem, I would still find out a way to make my own publication and meet my goals on medium to become one of the creators from whom I like to learn.

If you know a way to avoid this problem please respond to this story; it will be really appreciated — — and also don’t forget to follow if you like.
