I was a Teenager in Japan, and I did Stupid Things
If I would have got caught, that would have been bad

My dad was an AirForce Enlisted man. Our family did two three-year tours in Japan. We loved Japan. My dream is to have the money to go back to my old stomping grounds. Yokota AirForce Base and Fussa City.
When you’re a teenager in Japan, if you are careful, you can get away with some stupid shit. A lot of kids I knew weren’t careful, causing their dads to lose stripes when their kids got busted.
Rules are made to be broken by Idiots
Teenagers had to be eighteen or over to drive off-base. There was a notation on our driver’s license, written in Kanji. It said the driver was underage. There were penalties for getting caught driving off-base.
There were penalties for the Service-Member as well. The thought was, if you can’t control your kids, you have no business being an officer or NCO.
It could ruin a career
I guy I knew, if I remember, his dad was a Full-Bird Colonel, the guy bought some beer for some kids who were under eighteen. He got caught, and his dad was busted down to Sergeant.
There were also penalties for drinking and driving and driving while drunk. I was a teenager, and I did stupid things. At first, I resisted, but I was at the Teen Club one night.
Peer Pressure trumped common sense
I was with a group of guys, “ Hey Lawson, We’re pitching in for some beer, do you want to pitch in?” I said sure, and someone bought the beer.
“ We need you to take us off base, there’s a place close by where we can drink without being hassled.” It took some convincing, but peer pressure beat common sense.
There was a case of beer in the trunk, and we were underaged
It was late, we were up to no good. I wasn’t paying attention when I went straight in a turn lane, and a Security Policeman saw us. I tried to stay calm while everyone in the car encouraged me to calm down.
The cop wasn’t stupid. He knew something was up, but he let us go with a warning. I took my license back and we headed off base. We drank our beer and returned to the base without further incident.
My dad would have beat my ass, and grounded me until the next century
My dad didn’t find this out until I was in my thirties. If he would have found out then, I doubt I would be alive now to write this. The military is not kind to soldiers that can’t control their kids.
It wasn’t uncommon for a parent to lose stripes, or bars because their kids were stupid. Drinking and driving introduced an element of enhanced risk to the whole adventure.
I never had a good reason to drive off Base
The bad thing, it popped my cherry. I drove off base again on several occasions. I wasn’t as bad as some kids I knew, they didn’t think about it, they drove off base like they had a Right to. My dad didn’t find out until I was in my thirties.
He freaked out. He didn’t understand how conservative and Law-Abiding his wild teenager grew up to be. I’m fortunate I didn’t get caught, for my dad’s sake, and mine.
Final Thought:
Actions have consequences. I’m fortunate that I made it through my teens and twenties without getting killed, or going to prison. Teenagers think they are smarter than everyone else. Real intelligence is made up of a good part of common sense.
Think before you do something stupid.
