I Walked Away from the ‘Prestige’ of my Pharmacy Career to Pursue Copywriting — Here’s Why

Leaving my ‘identity’ as a brilliant pharmacist was not an easy decision to make.
My parents had invested heavily in me, and studying to become a pharmacist was fascinating to me.
If you have ever had to switch from a conventional career path to one that is not clearly defined, you can probably relate to what it feels like.
Having to explain my decision to friends and loved ones and watching them try to make sense of it.
Especially when people still mix up copywriting with copyrighting.
But that wasn’t always my story.
I was obsessed by the intricate details of how medicines work and their ability to directly help patients improve their health (I think I still am).
And during my years in pharmacy school, I participated in patient counselling competitions, poster presentations, student exchange programs, and anything that demonstrated my commitment to becoming an exceptional pharmacist.
I got good grades and made my parents proud when I attained my PharmD degree with high honours.
I readily embraced the role of a pharmacist, and I thrived on the intellectual stimulation of being a pharmacist.
I loved optimizing medicine regimens through pharmacokinetics, detecting adverse drug events, and counseling patients on safe medication use.
The prestige associated with being a knowledgeable healthcare professional was also gratifying.
As a pharmacist, I was respected for my expertise and admired for choosing such a noble, stable career.
I got married exactly one year after graduation, got pregnant shortly after, and started a new role as a hospital pharmacy intern in a reputable hospital.
And that’s why the tides started to turn.
The long hours, high-pressure decisions, and chaotic environment in the emergency room and surgical floors began to take a toll.
I started dreading the nighttime shifts, knowing I’d come home utterly exhausted with little time for anything else.
My passion for pharmacy was slowly being suppressed by the demands of balancing a stressful job with my roles as a new wife and expecting mom.
I needed an outlet — something just for me — to provide fulfillment and respite from the grind of my day job.
I wanted to have optional ways of making money aside from pharmacy.
It took a premature labour scare (when I was 8 months pregnant) after a nighttime shift in the theatre to wake me up.
I I started researching alternative career options out of desperation. I had always enjoyed writing and creative expression, although I had never considered it to be my number one career path.
And then I stumbled upon the world of copywriting.
As I read about the experiences of copywriters helping businesses grow through words, something clicked.
I realized I could combine my lifelong love of writing with the skills in communication and persuasive psychology I had developed as a pharmacist.
Over the next few months, I invested all my free time into building my copywriting skills — watching tutorials, taking courses, refining my brand, and completing specialized certifications.
Soon, I began acquiring my first clients for freelance work.
The joy I felt crafting compelling narratives and seeing my words come to life was inexplicable. I had re-discovered my passion.
I was building my brand on LinkedIn and was attracting offers from different countries around the world!
It was a dream come true. Copywriting became my creative outlet and ultimate dream.
In less than a year, I made the terrifying leap to pursue copywriting full-time.
I left the security and prestige of being a pharmacist for a career based solely on my talent, skills, and interests, not just my credentials.
It was incredibly challenging at first to walk away from the title I had worked so hard for. But the freedom, flexibility, and fulfillment I’ve found are irreplaceable.
I still leverage my pharmacy knowledge when writing for medical, healthcare, and supplement brands. But now my career aligns with my passions.
This is my 3rd year of being a copywriter, and I’ve worked with over 50 brands and clients in various countries, including the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, Slovenia, Dubai, and others.
I have been a team member on so many successful launches and campaigns with 6, 7, and even 8–9-figure brands.
I have no regrets about leaving the perceived prestige of pharmacy behind.
Seeing my words resonate with readers and impact businesses is deeply meaningful. I’m honored I get to pursue my purpose and support my family — all from home.
For me, that’s the greatest prestige of all!
