I Used To Believe We Were Put On This Earth For A Reason
Now I know better.
I’m not a nihilist.
Believe me, the title of this article bothered me as much as it bothered you to click.
There’s no comfort in being told that your existence is meaningless, but before I lose you, please know that this isn’t exactly where I’m going with this.
I used to believe we were put on this earth for a reason, but now I know that we were put on Earth with a reason—a reason to live our life with intention and for good so that we don’t live in misery and the world benefits.
When you are in pursuit of what’s good and true to you, the world benefits from it.
Why live life being miserable? Why live in a world that you aren’t trying to make better? Why not do something about it?
Somehow you think this thing is all about you. Don’t you? Do you not realize your footprint in the world? Do you think that neglecting it and going through the motions doesn’t have a detrimental effect on the earth?
It does.
Your dreams add value to the world. If you aren’t pursuing them, and if you aren’t doing anything else, you aren’t contributing. You aren’t doing your part. What use do you have? How are you making things better? If you aren’t doing anything, it still affects the world negatively. Your inaction doesn’t mean things can continue to run along smoothly and forget about you. No, your inaction brings everything down and affects the system.
Why not care about your home? Why not care about yourself and your role in it?
When we live life actively pursuing those beautiful dreams that set our souls on fire, we are pursuing what’s good. The only reason why there are problems in the world is that everyone is trying to dominate instead of contribute.
Your dreams provide value to the world. Your choices affect things going on elsewhere, even when it doesn’t seem like it. And if that isn’t necessarily true, why not believe it?
If you don’t believe that your dreams serve a greater purpose and make the world better, you won’t do anything about it because you don’t care enough about yourself.
Even if you do care about yourself more than the world, how is sulking in your misery showing that you care? How is neglecting what’s meaningful to you an act of self-care?
Part of the reason why you fail to pursue your dreams is that you don’t truly think the consequences of not pursuing them are great, but they are. It’s greater than you in fact.
We humans, as selfish as we are, become really selfless when it comes to pursuing our dreams. All of a sudden, we no longer care about what happens to us when we neglect them and go through the motions of life. We no longer care how much we are killing ourselves inside. Pursuing dreams is hard and uncomfortable, so instead of doing the “selfish” thing like caring about yourself enough to act despite those feelings and despite everything going on because you deeply want that life you envision for yourself, you neglect it all.
You don’t realize that the selfish thing is to NOT pursue your dreams.
It’s beyond me, but there are people out there who actually believe that pursuing your dreams is the most selfish thing you can do, as if sitting around being miserable and hating yourself and not having the energy to do anything else with intention is any more selfless.
No, living that way only ruins the world. If everyone is miserable and plagued by hopelessness, it suffocates the world with desperation and depression. That’s why no one is happy nowadays. Ask around. No one has hope for our world anymore because they are too consumed in the problems of everyone else.
If you are sitting around and not doing anything yourself, you’re a problem too. Even if you can’t see how your inaction is having a detrimental effect on the earth, then why don’t you care enough about yourself to see how it’s having a detrimental effect on you?
How can a world not die when it’s full of people who would rather remain oblivious to their part in it?
No one is realizing that their negativity and neglect and “everything is lost” attitude is only making things worse.
When we don’t have hope for anything, and I mean anything (it doesn’t even need to be your dreams here; I’m talking if we don’t have hope for the good in any type of pursuit), then the world crumbles.
I’m convinced that God or the universe or whatever you believe in realizes that eventually, we’ll just end the world ourselves.
The end is inevitable, and we can only stall it. There’s always going to be negativity that brings everything down and puts people at odds with each other.
There will always be dissonance and discord, devastation and demise. It’s unavoidable. But while you’re here, why not do your best?
You can either throw your hands up in the air and say “all is lost” or “something is worth fighting for”. I ask you, which mentality best serves you?
We spend too much time making things complex. We ask too many questions. We are worried so much about the details that we can’t see the big picture.
At the end of the day, how do you want to feel? How do you want to live your life?
We all know that dreams aren’t guaranteed and this thing you want may never work out, so what will you do with that information? Do you find this thing worthwhile enough to try anyway? Or would you rather sulk in your own misery?
People often say “What would you do if you couldn’t fail?”, but I ask of you, “What would you do if you couldn’t control whether or not you did?”
It’s really simple. You either pursue your dreams or you don’t. You either regret things in the end or smile knowing you gave your all.
You either contribute to the world and add value in some way, or you let it burn faster. The choice is yours.
