Summary

Larry Nowicki reflects on his evolving relationship with fishing, transitioning from a carefree pastime to a mindful meditation practice.

Abstract

Larry Nowicki shares his personal journey with fishing, initially indulging in the hobby for relaxation and enjoyment, regardless of catching fish. As life became busier with career and family, his approach to fishing shifted towards efficiency and results, prioritizing catching over the experience itself. Eventually, he rediscovered the essence of fishing, finding it to be a form of meditation that allows him to connect with nature and find peace amidst life's distractions. Now, he views fishing as an opportunity for mindfulness, where the act of fishing itself is the reward, and any catch is simply a bonus.

Opinions

  • Fishing used to be a leisure activity for Larry, focused on relaxation and simplicity.
  • The transition to a busier life phase made Larry more results-oriented in his fishing habits, valuing efficiency and productivity.
  • Larry came to realize that the true value of fishing lies in its meditative qualities and the opportunity to immerse oneself in nature.
  • He emphasizes the importance of being present and mindful during fishing, which he considers a form of meditation.
  • Larry now perceives catching fish as a secondary outcome, with the primary benefit being the meditative state achieved through the act of fishing.
  • He suggests that even a busy individual like himself can appreciate the value of fishing as a means to escape daily distractions and reconnect with nature.

I used to go fishing

When I was younger I used to enjoy just going fishing. It didn’t matter whether I was catching anything or not. I did it for the relaxation. I did it for the enjoyment of just being out and being able to concentrate on just one thing fishing.

I even have a hat says shut up and fish. I didn’t really understand what it meant.

Eventually, things got busier. Life got busier, kids, job, that kind of stuff. I stopped having the time to enjoy fishing. It was boring. Too many things going on to stop and smell the roses(fish).

It took to long. If I didn’t catch quickly that would not work. To me, if I didn’t get enough it wasn’t worth doing.

Eventually, I stopped fishing. I started catching.

I learned when to fish. I learned where to fish. I learned how to fish.

I was no longer fishing. I was catching. This went on for years and years and fishing was not much fun anymore. If I wasn’t catching, it wasn’t worth doing.

Recently I found out that it doesn’t really matter anymore if I’m catching. The important thing is coming in tune with mother nature.

Paying attention to all the surroundings. Paying attention to the habits of the fish. Putting a rod in the water and concentrating on the bait. Knowing the tides.

Even though there is lot’s going on it’s like meditation. Getting away from the distractions that come with everyday life. The meditation that you achieve from fishing lets you block out everything else that happens to be going on. Concentrate on fishing. It ends up being a meditation. I got exactly what I want so that if I catch a fish I see it as a bonus.

A busy man doesn’t have time to fish. If I have to go catching I know how to do that. I can go back there in a heartbeat.

I used to go fishing. Then I went catching. Now I know why I went fishing. Its meditation. Just focus on fishing and everything else goes away… Shut up and fish.

I think I’ll go fishing
