Summary

The coaching method "chunking" is used to solve problems by changing perspectives to gain clarity, which includes "chunking up" (generalization) and "chunking down" (specification).

Abstract

The coaching method "chunking" is introduced as a powerful tool to solve problems, similar to how a hedgehog uses its one trick of rolling into a spiky ball to defend itself. "Chunking" consists of two parts: "chunking up" and "chunking down." "Chunking up" involves looking at a problem from a broader perspective, which helps to eliminate the sense of helplessness. On the other hand, "chunking down" focuses on looking at a problem from a narrower perspective, which helps to determine the exact source of the problem and untangle the issue. An example of using "chunking" with a colleague at work is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique.

I first learned the word “hedgehog” when I was 24.

I have never seen one before, but I always respected their efficiency. They have one trick…. rolling into a spiky ball. It helps against any threat.

Coincidently, at 24, I learned a coaching technique called “chunking”.

Since learning it, it became my “spiky ball”. I throw it at problems. And voila! Helplessness, confusion, you name it…. Gone!

Chunking is moving the problem up and down to unclog your brain and have clarity. It consists of:

Chunking up (generalization)

Looking at a problem from a broader perspective. It places the issue in its place and eliminates the sense of helplessness.

Chunking down (specification):

Looking at a problem from a narrower perspective. It determines the exact source of the problem and untangles the issue.

Here is an actual example where I used chunking with a colleague at work.

Colleague: I can’t write a good report. I feel lost every time I get to write one. I tried, but it doesn’t work.

Chunking up:

Me: you can’t write any report well! Never wrote one?

She: no, I did write a few, ….. report, and …… report

Me: so, you can write reports?

She: yes, but I followed a template

Chunking down:

Me: The template was that useful?

She: yes, I knew what to write and where to write it.

Me: So, you need help with identifying the outline?

She: I also can’t determine the length of each section and level of detail.

Me: Should we prepare an outline together and agree on what to include in each section now?

She: yeah! And I can take it from there.

I hope that was helpful! Try it out and let me know.
