I Use “The Walking Dead” As Inspiration For Fresh Content

Tapping Into Creative Sources As A Writer

Some of my recent articles have been inspired by the show, The Walking Dead — I bet you would’ve never guessed (winky face).

As a writer, every experience in your life that you partake of is content.

Every day offers a lesson. Every conversation offers a distinct perspective that you can utilize in your writing. Every interaction can be a learning experience.

If you are a consistent writer, one thing you always need is FRESH CONTENT. Of course, you can repurpose previously published materials — this works, too. But there truly is limitless content available to you if you heighten your self-awareness and eagerness for learning.

If you’re a writer and like watching movies and shows, use TV time as inspiration for content. Make a usually unproductive activity productive.

Here are some things to think about when you’re watching tv:

  1. What lessons can I, or others, learn and apply to life?
  2. How do the personality traits of the characters hinder or benefit their lives?
  3. What emotions do I feel when I watch this movie/show, and why?
  4. What choices are made, and what are the effects of these choices?
  5. Does this movie/show add value to the world or perpetuate negative thinking and actions?
  6. Do any of the characters make me angry, sad, frustrated, nostalgic, or happy?
  7. Can I relate to anything or anyone?

The list goes on and on. When you watch TV with a slant towards learning something, you will usually gain at least one takeaway that you can write about.

List of content sources:

  • Television
  • Conversations
  • Personal experiences of others (with anonymity)
  • Past experiences
  • Work-life
  • Observations of your surroundings
  • Daily life
  • Personal struggles
  • Pets
  • Family Life

What do you use for inspiration in your writing? You no longer need to get stuck (writer’s block). Instead, use your life experience as your reliable and never-ceasing content generator.

And for everyone who is NOT a writer, you are still a creator in your own way. How can you tap into new, creative, and distinctive ideas that you can apply to your craft?

Get outside of the usual box-like thinking by exposing yourself to NEW surroundings, learning materials, experiences, and people.
